First time attempting to build a gaming PC

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to build a new gaming PC for the first time and my friend suggested that I post what I think in this website and see what guidance I can get. So this will be my first post and I thank everyone for their help in advance.
I'm trying not to go over 2500$ with the monitor included.
The build that I'm thinking of currently is this:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
  • Cooler:  Swiftech H240-X 90.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (I was looking for a low noise liquid cooler and this is what I came up with)
  • Motherboard:  Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX LGA1151 (Still debating whether to take this or z170 A or z170 Pro gaming or switch to X99 altogether and go with a 5820K cpu)
  • Memory:  G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
  • Storage:  Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  and  Seagate 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive
  • GPU:  MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Video Card (To be honest I didn't know the difference between the different versions of 980 Ti so I just chose this)
  • Case:  Fractal Design Define R5 w/Window (Titanium) ATX Mid Tower Case
  • PSU:  Corsair 760W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (I might add another GPU later for 2-way SLI, bringing the wattage to 720/760. I this OK / safe?)
  • Optical Drive:  LG UH12NS29 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer
  • Monitor:  Acer G257HU smidpx 60Hz 25.0" Monitor
  • Wi-fi adapter:  TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
  • Case fans: Do I need additional? case fans?

Current wattage is 470 and overall price is around 2400$.
The build can be found here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/RagingWrath/saved/Jp37YJ

I'm making the jump from a casual laptop to a gaming PC and I don't understand a lot about the different parts. Please let me know if there are any suggestions or if what I'm doing is completely wrong or is not cost efficient.

EDIT: current alternative build is: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/RagingWrath/saved/rvdZxr

Not sure why you want a SSHD paired with a SSD. Why not go for a 2TB HDD and a SSD instead to save some money?

'Fanboyism is stupid' - someone on this forum.

Be nice to each other boys and girls. And don't cheap out on a power supply.

Ok just informing you the 5820k and 6700k are both monsters of CPUs and unless your doing rendering and editing you will see very minimal performance boost over and i5 but if your doing multitasking or editing it's a good choice, secondly like someone said go for a ssd and an hdd instead of sshd and ssd. Other than that good luck with your first PC and I hope all goes well

Thank you both for raising this point. I might very well do that.

Are there any future-proof advantages/disadvantages between the X99 and the Z170? My initial choice was the 5820k but then it was suggested to use a Z170 with a 6700k and then wait for the future release of 6820k.

6850K* will not work with Z170 but it WILL work with X99 boards. It's Broadwell-E, not Skylake-E.

5820K is around 40% faster than a 6700K

Oh I had no idea about that. Thanks a lot, this will most likely change the equation for me.

This is the alternative build with everybody's suggestions.I also changed the wi-fi adapter to include ac protocol. Thank you all for your input. I might not be able to find the listed case and liquid cooler where I live so if anybody has any suggestions for alternative good mid tower case and a low noise cooler please feel free to share.
