The dual core will likely perform better in most games. But I have heard of games that wont even start on a dual core. If you can pick up an fx-6300 or something and overclock it, that might be an even better option.

For example: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2851126/far-cry-4-woes-with-dual-core-processors-point-to-a-bleak-future-for-budget-pc-gamers.html

EDIT: Pickup a low end quad core i5 if you can http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16819116781

If you want a clear upgrade path to a better chip (potentially much better, like, Xeon 1231v3 or i7-4770K/4790K better), get the Pentium.

If you don't care about having an upgrade path and just want something to handle today's games at playable FPS, grab the Athlon.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

FX6300 is beyond outdated. i3 6100 would be ideal.

12700, B660M Mortar DDR4, 32GB 3200C16 Viper Steel, 2TB SN570, EVGA Supernova G6 850W, be quiet! 500FX, EVGA 3070Ti FTW3 Ultra.

860K is a better CPU overall, however if you're going to upgrade sooner than around 6 months, go with the pentium

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White
