GTX 970 for 2560 x 1440?

PyroBlast13

So I was wondering if a single 970 would be good enough to run the latest games at 2560 x 1440 at high to ultra settings at 60 fps?

Depends what games, but i run a 970 with a 1440p monitor just fine, GSYNC helps with that i think

Looking for a job

It really depends on the game.

If it's a hard to run game, then no, if it's something easier, then yes.

No. You will have to concede either on ultra/high settings, or on 60fps. You won't get both with most new AAA games.

what if I had a 2 way sli with 970s? Would that give a good enough preformance increase?

The 970 is okay at 1440p but at that price point, you would rather get a 390, which is the same about price as the 970 but has more vram, which is better for higher resolutions.

It is always better to get a single, more powerful gpu than two weaker gpus. SLI won't increase the amount of vram you have, which is important for running high resolutions. Performance increase in SLI will also depend on whether the game is able to take advantage of SLI or not. If the game can't take advantage of SLI, then you will get the performance of a single 970, even though you have two of them.

With a GTX780 @ 1440p I have to turn most AAA games down to medium settings for close to 60fps consistently and a 970 isn't that much better. For high/ultra at 1440p I wouldn't go less than a GTX980 of fury.

No. If you want 60fps ultra you have to go for a 980 minimum.

Nope.

Many of the latest titles are creeping up on Crysis 3 levels of demanding, and a 970 can't stay at 60fps on ultra even at 1080p at all times.

Yeah, the harder to run games like GTA V require some tweaks just below ultra to get a solid 60 fps. Then Witcher 3 you're talking a mix of high and very high with no hairworks. You need a 980 Ti for 1440p ultra at 60 fps on the more demanding AAA titles.

A 980 Ti would be better. Less power consumption so you can go a little cheaper on the power supply but more importantly you don't have to wait for SLI scaling to be fixed in games when they come out. One of the big advantages of buying an Nvidia GPU is they have decent drivers at launch for most big games, but since multi-GPU users are such an extreme minority of their customer base they're not a priority early on for game releases.

2nd this. I have an OC'd 980 and I only get 45-50fps avg on Witcher 3 at 1440p with a near ultra, some high settings. hairworks alone takes up 10 fps.

OP If you can wait till the june-august then get the GTX 1080

The 970 is actually a lot faster in recent titles. I think the 970 is a solid choice for 1440p. Because in reality, you're always gonna have to turn down some settings to get a solid 60fps, even with the highest end cards. I have a 390x which isn't that much faster than a 970, but it does an awesome job at 1440p while still maintaining good image quality and a constant framerate.

i had a 780 and it was gaming well at 1440p...the 970 is better than that.

But you will not run ultra settings @ 60FPS 2560x1440...not gonna happen.

BUT you will run FXAA and High-settings at 60FPS though which looks simply gorgeous...lot better than anything you've seen at 1080p.

Check the R9 390 out, I'm running a Sapphire 390 currently and have no issues with running StarWars Battlefront - Ultra 60+Fps, Crysis 2 (High texture mod w/ dx11 upgrade) 60+ fps and Crysis 3 - High (w/ some very high settings enabled) @ 60+fps. Mostly I turn the settings down to reduce the frame latency and get that smooth gaming experience :)

At 2560x1440 most of the reviews conclude it trumps the 970 in terms of performance. 970 Wins most battles with the 390 around 1920x1080 but the 390 begins to pull ahead in the higher 16:9 resolutions.

The 970 could, in my opinion, give a totally fine gaming experience at 1440p.  Sure, there are some games where you might have to turn down the graphics, but you could always just switch the resolution to 1080p on games that it struggles with :)

I have a 970 running @1440p and it does good not great but you can get +45 fps on must games with no noticeable stutter on must games. On mainstream games you can definitely get 60 FPS. no problem. This is w\o overclocking
