Question!

I would like to bring to attention some questions I had about this forums rules before I may post. I also had some comments on the code of conduct that I would like to bring to the attention of the moderators as well as the users of this forum. By posting this message, I am not breaking any rules in the code of conduct, the only thing I am doing is bringing about a lively and civilized conversation on the code of conduct. This is what the forums goal is, to bring about lively and healthy discussion, correct? If there is a problem with this post, then please delete or lock it. I just think my edits would be needed in the forums code of conduct. This post is all my opinion, and if anyone agrees with me on this then you can say so.

4. Spamming
We do not want spam on Linus Tech Tips. There are certain sections of the forum designated for "off topic" and "general" posting of posts that may not fall into one of the already laid out sections of the forum. At all times though, this is a tech centered and focused forum. That being said, spam includes, but is not limited to the following:

    •    Excessive/excessively off-topic threads or posts.
(Please define excessive by a certain number of posts.)
    •    Posting nonsensical messages.
    •    "Flooding" the forum with similar meaning messages.
(Please also define what you mean by “flooding”, it is different on different forums. Although I am assuming that this is a very laid back forum.)
    •    Post-Count farming.
(Post count farming? This is a nonsensical message within itself. If you post anything within a short amount of time outside of off topic, you are technically farming posts. I will need clarification, if I may ask the moderators.)
    •    Unsolicited advertising via private message or email.
(Please relocate to the advertising section of the code of conduct.)
    •    Messages without content relevant to this website's mission.
(This post may be interpreted as non relevant to the forums mission by some, but i find this very relevant, as this will hopefully induce a lively discussion around the code of conduct. This forums mission is to have lively and interesting discussion. And that is what i am trying to do here.)
    •    Do not intentionally derail threads. Off-Topic is there for a reason.
    •    Repeated posting with constant referrals to other website(s) with no purpose other than the promotion of that website.
(this belongs in advertising, not spamming.)
    •    Fraudulent activity (Pyramid schemes, chain letters, etc.)
    •    Reputation or "Likes" farming. (Do not understand what this means, but I would like it to be explained, once again)
    •    The posting solely of memes or similar images without contributing to the discussion, memes can be funny and applicable but if it is completely unrelated it is spam.
(I would not encourage it, but if you find that applicable, then that is your choice.)
    •    The posting of AMA's - ask me anything type threads.
    •    Posting any of the above will result in your post being deleted and your account being infracted or worse, suspended. (does not belong under spamming, belongs in the consequences portion)
    •    Do not create multiple accounts (Another problem) (If someone goes to the same school as me and knows about linus tech tips and makes an account, then I will be taken action against, and it will become my problem. I would like to get this sorted out with a moderator.)
4.1 Trolling
This includes but is not limited to the following:
    •    Creating threads for the sole purpose of causing unrest on the forums. (There in creating religion posts is not allowed)
    •    Causing disturbances in forum threads such as picking fights or insulting other members. (Self defense should be allowed)
    •    Making non-constructive posts for the purpose of causing unrest.  This includes posting LMGTFY links. (this is COMPLETELY out of place. Remember when you stated creating for the sole purpose of causing unrest was not allowed? Add the includes LMGTFY links and this statement is completely unnecessary.)
    •    Abusing the Report Post feature by sending false alarms or nonsensical messages(.)( You missed the period. What does nonsensical messages have to do with reporting posts? This once again belongs under the spamming section of the Code of Conduct)
    •    Labelling(Incorrect spelling. Labeling) a thread, IBTL, TLDR, or any other fad statements.
    •     (Then why is turnip not banned? That is a “fad” statement and many people use it.) (On the other hand people are allowed to label posts anything they like, as the word “labelling” is not a word.)
    •    Replying to a thread simply to call the author a troll (regardless of whether the post is actually trolling) (This should be re stated by saying instead of calling them a troll, click the report button and the moderators will get to the post as soon as possible.) (also relocate to spamming, since this is not trolling by calling the user a troll.)
    •    Excessive use of different fonts / font colors for non post formatting purposes will result in moderative action.
    •    Quoting another user but editing their quote
    •    (Now this is undefined. You need to specify what you mean by “Quoting another user but editing out their post”. If someone is deleting another users quote because it takes up a lot of space, then there should not need to have any action taken. If the user changes the post to say something that would relate to trolling, then that should not be allowed. Please update the code of conduct as soon as possible.)
    •
    •    4.3 Thread Necroing
    •    Thread necroing consists of reviving a previously resolved, settled, or "dead" thread after a prolonged period of time by the OP with the intention of bumping the thread to the top of the board. Threads with an activity gap of 1 month or greater that are brought back to the front page is considered "thread necroing". A shorter duration may be considered when dealing with situations like previously resolved threads being reposted or simply for the purpose of bumping it to the front page. Build logs are exempt from this rule.
    •    (If someone has an issue that has not been resolved over a month, they wait, and no one responds, then it is okay for them to post another thread on the exact same thing? Or necro it? You need to specify again.)
    •
    •
    •    5. Signatures & Profiles
Signature information must adhere to these guidelines:
    •    No signature will exceed 3 lines in length on a 1080p screen.
    •    No signature will ask for reputation, likes, stars or any such ego-enhancing things. (This would pertain to “like farming”)
    •    No signature shall have an image.
    •    No signature shall be animated in any way, avatars are allowed to be animated for now. Avatars must not contain any rapid and sharp color changes (flashing, blinking, etc.) as these can cause epileptic seizures.
    •    Do not manually type in a signature or sign-off at the end of every post; signatures are only allowed using the built-in signature function.
(This should be moved to the spamming section of the code of conduct.)
    •    Do not increase font size beyond size 14.
    •    Signatures are text only
    •    The only links allowed, in your signature or status updates, are those pertaining to Linus Tech Tips (the CoC, your build log, etc.). Please note the advertising rules still apply to this. This includes listing twitch, YouTube, etc.

Profiles have various sections for listing your Twitter account, Facebook name, a URL (be it your YouTube channel or other site), etc. This is the only section where listing this information is allowed. You are not allowed to advertise this in any post as in the actual links. You can have "reference my profile for more information" for example. All Advertising rules still apply.

10. Moderation & Bans
    •    You may not attempt to evade a ban by creating another account or any other means. Doing so will dramatically lengthen your ban. If you have a problem with a ban or feel it was inappropriate, please contact an administrator and wait for a response.
    •    You may not discuss or complain in open forum about another user's ban, the deletion of a message, or the deletion/closure of a thread. Any discussion about warnings, bans, message deletion, thread deletion and thread closure should be done over private email/message between the person concerned and the moderators.
    •    You may not re-edit a message that has been edited by a moderator.
    •    Do not back seat moderate. Report an offending post using the report button located at the bottom right of each post. Please do not make posts in the thread or send messages reprimanding other users about rulebreaking (rule breaking), this may be considered off topic/spam. Let the moderation team deal with the situation via the report button.
(Again relocate to the spamming section of the forum)
    •    Moderators cannot read private messages unless they are reported.
(This poses a very bad threat. I am assuming this is fake and that moderators CAN read what others send. If someone sends illegal images through your sites private message system, and the moderators can NOT read it, then you have a problem.)
    •    If you ever have ANY problem with ANY moderator at ANY time PLEASE contact Slick either through the forum with a PM or any other medium that you feel like using.

This is my opinion if i may state again.

I am not trying to create unrest in the forum, i am simply trying to bring up my point.

Freedom of Speech.

Honestly I just think that we need to be allowed to post Google or LMGTFY links because some people are either fucking dumb or fucking lazy (or a combination of both) and need that for their god awful stupidty.

Everything else I'm okay with. Just wish mods were stricter. And checked reports more often.

Generally speaking, as long as the following rules are met you should never find yourself subject to disciplinary action:

  • Ensure a friendly atmosphere to our visitors and forum members.
  • Encourage the freedom of expression and exchange of information in a mature and responsible manner. (There are many instances of this not being met, either by the members of this forum or the moderators)
  • "Don't be a dick" - Wil Wheaton.
  • "Be excellent to each other" - Bill and Ted.
  • Remember your audience; both present and future.

The following is not an exhaustive list of the rules and guidelines that must be followed when participating on Linus Tech Tips. The administration and moderation team reserve the right to terminate any and all accounts or remove any content at any stage without prior notice. The rules outlined below are only the minimum expectations of members, and not every issue can be predicted and addressed here, so conduct could still be considered out of line even if it isn't covered here specifically. The instructions of the moderation team must be followed at all times.

  • No harassment, discrimination or abuse of any kind.
    • This includes insults, fanboy, or troll accusations
  • No pornography or sexually explicit material
  • No spam
    • ‘LMGTFY’ links (This is a bad move, i simply think that the moderator team should have an open poll about most of these options, no matter what they are. I think this one in particular needs a poll.)
    • Post count/reputation farming (What IS reputation farming? Getting someone to like your post?)
    • 'Ask Me Anything’ threads
    • Tagging things as 'repost' or 'reported' (I assume the fads are now allowed.)
  • No Trolling (Trolling is a very vague option, expand on something you said on the harassment side of things.)
    • This includes flame wars such as Microsoft vs Apple, NVIDIA vs AMD, Intel vs AMD
  • No advertising
    • No eBay/trading sites
    • No referral links
    • No YouTube channels. See here regarding product reviews.
    • Twitch/YouTube links ARE allowed in user profile status updates (Contradicting, and needs to be edited.)
  • No pirated/cracked content
  • Signatures
    • Text only, up to size 14 (Are you allowed to post everything in size 50 outside of signatures?)
  • Privacy
    • In the interests of personal safety we do not permit the posting of personal information other than your own. This includes usernames, email addresses etc.
    • We highly discourage the posting of and will actively remove any personal information of persons under the age of 16 (What is the difference between removing personal information of someone 16 and someone 24? still considered releasing information without permission, should be actively remove anyone's post that releases personal info.)
  • Moderation & Bans
    • Do not openly discuss the moderation of any content or user. If you have an issue, please contact a staff member.
    • Do not backseat moderate – if there’s an issue, please use the report function.
    • Please be aware staff cannot see private messages unless they are reported.
    • If you have an issue with a moderator at any time, please contact an Administrator via PM (@Slick @Whaler_99 @Windspeed36)
  • Forum Specific Requirements

We appreciate the feedback, but the requirements outlined in the Community Standards are only the basics, and are not meant to be in-depth. Again, we appreciate the feedback.
