Moto 360 vs. Apple Watch

Before I say anything, I want to make it clear that when the Apple Watch first came out, I promised myself I was not going to buy it. I had a pebble at the time and wanted to upgrade for some more functionality which I didnt get around to doing until the beginning of January. As I walked into Best Buy with the mindset to pick up the Moto 360 V2 to pair with my iPhone 6s, I noticed the Apple Watch was on sale. Although I am not one to jump on bandwagons, as I was playing with Apple Watch display, I realized the Apple Watch actually isnt too bad IMO. I was instantly torn between the two and impulsively picked the Apple Watch Sport 42 mm. I used the for a couple of weeks with the constant weight on my shoulders of whether I picked the right product for me. Well tonight, I broke down and went back and picked up the Moto 46mm in Silver and Cognac leather. As soon as i got it out of the box and paired with my phone, I loved it. I do plan to maybe switch to android in the future, as I would prefer more customization. As I got it home for further inspection, I enjoyed the Moto experience, but there just wasnt enough functionality for my liking. Not being able to download ANY third party apps I was pretty much back to square one with my Pebble. I'm not bashing the Moto 360 in any way shape or form, if I was on android this would be my go to. But I feel like people should give the apple watch more credit than it gets. You may not be able to download any other watch faces, but performance has improved since Watch OS 2 and IMHO if you have an iPhone, either go with a pebble or go with the Apple Watch. I would like other peoples opinions on this subject, I know most of you guys probably hate apple, but if I wanted to spend another 350 bucks on a Moto 360 that had the same functionality my old watch did just with an upgraded display, I would be dumb. Like I said, I am in no way, shape or form bashing the Moto 360, like I said I would love that watch if I wasnt on iOS, Give your opinions!

If you want a more premium feel then the closest thing to an Apple Watch on the Android market is the Huawei watch.  In my opinion, the Moto 360 2 serves me better, and I went all out on the options, gold finish, gold band and the knurled bezel, it gets me drooling every time I look at it.

TLDR: basically they both suck, we need new battery technology, and can't you make it untethered from your phone. No really I am not going to spend $500 on a thing requiring a $799 phone in my pocket. Not to mention oh look my arm vibrated let me see, a notification from twitter let me reach and grab my phone out to actually read it. Oh look I can text people with it and I look like and idiot talking to my wrist and everyone around me can hear I need stool softener from the store.

TLDR: basically they both suck, we need new battery technology, and can't you make it untethered from your phone. No really I am not going to spend $500 on a thing requiring a $799 phone in my pocket. Not to mention oh look my arm vibrated let me see, a notification from twitter let me reach and grab my phone out to actually read it. Oh look I can text people with it and I look like and idiot talking to my wrist and everyone around me can hear I need stool softener from the store.

FYI, on android wear you don't even need it to be in your pocket, it can be connected via wifi. you can leave your phone at home if you wish. as long as your watch has a wifi connection it will still get you notifications.

I can read texts and emails on my gen1 moto360 just fine, there is no need to pull out your phone.

Yes replying via voice is super gimmicky. But i personally don't feel like that is what the watch is even for. (I don't even use it at all)

You get a text in a meeting etc, instead of pulling out your phone you can discretely check your watch to see if its anything urgent. if it isn't just ignore it for now. Its for stuff like that which i feel is the key point of the smartwatch.

My phone is in my pocket, i want to change the song i'm listening to, swipe on my watch.

I get a call while my hands are full, flick my wrist to see if its important.

its a supplement to your phone and acts like a watch at the same time. so yeah.

 

Battery is poor yeah but its not as painful as people make it out to be. of course having better battery is still better.

My Moto360 was 130 euro on Amazon, I don't know where 700 came from. I can read emails and notifications perfectly well on it. The battery is always around 65% when I go to bed and it syncs notifications and emails over wifi if it is out of bluetooth range.

I have used the pebble, apple watch, and the Moto. The pebble seemed the best as it was very simple yet powerful, I played flappy bird on it. The apple watch felt really nice but it was sorta just there. You can look through your photos but the screen is so small it just isn't worth it. You can ping your phone which is nice. But other then that I don't workout so I don't use that aspect but if you do it might be nice well the Moto the apple one is sorta meh when it comes to running and stuff like Linus said

Okay Okay Okay. Wow there is so much bs in this thread. 

First: You can't compare moto 360's performance on ios with the apple watch's performance on ios. That's like saying the 17,000 dollar apple watch is a paper weight because it can't do anything on android.

 

Second: Smart Watches aren't meant for people who don't have the money/ or the requirement to be constantly connected. Most people who don't have a smart watch, believe that it is just a toy. As a owner of the apple watch, moto 360, and the gear s2 I can say that I probably would be very uncomfortable not wearing one. It basically takes another distraction out of your life. I can't put my phone on ringtone mode while I'm at work, and half the time I'll miss the vibration. A smart watch (moto 360 or apple watch) keeps me from worrying about missing something important. Yes I understand you can't run a full facebook or instagram client on it, BUT THAT ISN'T THE POINT.

 

Third: Yes, everyone knows the pebble is the best watch for inter device compatibility, it is the only device that works well (within its capabilities) on moth ios and android. BUT, that doesn't mean you can take an apple watch and say pebble is way better, because the apple watch can't work on android. (and vice versa for the moto 360).

 

 

I have used both the apple watch and the moto 360. I used the apple watch on ios, and the moto 360 on android. And I will tell you right now, If you have an Iphone get an apple watch or pebble (although I would recommend the apple watch, because it does have more functionality than "showing pictures"). And if you are on android get a moto 360 (or any other android wear smart watch (or a pebble, again would recommend a android wear)).

 

Now, with that aside, if you were considering switching from ios to android, or android to ios based on which smart watch is better, I would recommend the moto 360 (or any other android wear watch). Android wear and android combined are a powerful thing. I have enjoyed the way android wear handles itself in subtle ways than watch os (apple watch) does. Android wear is simply less complicated. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that android wear can't do what watch os can do.

 

Now if we talk strictly physical comparison between the moto 360 and the apple watch, I like the moto 360 better. I personally am just a fan of round faced watches/smart watches. But that's completely personal choice. But, I ESPECIALLY like the moto 360 over the apple watch because of the 360's battery life. I'm a heavy user, and with ambient mode ON, i can esaily get 2 days of battery life (my days are 6:45 am to 2 am the next day). The apple watch makes it a day and it doesn't have ambient mode functionality, and has insane fast screen timeouts. And while some might saw the apple watch can be more premium than the moto 360 (i'm not talking about the 17 thousand dollar version of the apple watch), if someone wants android wear there are 10's of watches out there with android wear. From square to round, plastic to metal, premium to not premium, small battery life to long battery life. It's completely your choice.

 

That said, you have to realise that apple watch is simply meant to work with ios and ios only. And the moto 360 (or any android wear) for the time being is meant for android only. Yes I know google made android wear available to ios, BUT that doesn't mean its meant to work fully. So please don't say one is better than the other unless you have tested both types of watches on their respective platforms.

My gen one Moto 360 is about as good aesthetically as it gets for smartwatches in my opinion, but unfortunately performance and battery life are sub-par, not to mention it not being updated to the latest Android wear. If you're on an iPhone (which you are if you are considering Apple watch), an Android watch would be a lot worse than it could be with less apps and faces than are available on Android. I can use it well with zero lag for looking at notifications and playing games like flopsy droid or 2048, but when swiping through the Google now-esque app launcher/contacts page, it is as laggy as a console running a game at 1080p. Voice commands get understood perfectly when they're heard. OK Google is detected most of the time. The watch has been incredibly durable so far, having been bumped all over the place and having been plunged into snow multiple times and suffering no noticeable damage, save for the metal strap being wrecked on the bottom from being on too many tables (noticeable scratching and reduced shine). The screen is noticeably low in resolution but colors and contrast are nice for an LCD. I use it in ambient mode and its gets through the daily routine, but if I go anywhere in the evening, it has to join my S6 on the charger. It is cheap now and the 2nd gen probably fixes all of the problems but resolution.

I have a gen 2 right now. My gen 1 used to go all the way down to 20 percent within 1 day.
