5930X or 5960X?

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

5930K will likely fulfill your requirements, and from a price to performance ratio, 5960X is not really worth it.

I am planning a new build and want some outside input on what would be best for me to get. I am down to getting an Intel Core i7-5930K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 2011-v3 or an Intel Core i7-5960X Haswell-E 8-Core 3.0 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W. My primary use is going to be for a gaming computer although I do edit video with Adobe Premiere and occasionally with Camtasia Studio. I remember watching an LTT video where they said that using any CPU larger than a quad core would result in unused cores when gaming but I am not sure how to apply that when including video editing. Also, my budget should be about $2500, which if I get the 6 core then I can afford 2 980s but if I get the 8 core then I can only get 1 for the time being. I would like to know what you think.

Thanks, Mark

But then again why get the 5930K if the only advantage it has over the 5820K are PCI lanes, and 28 of them is plenty for most people, most likely including OP and it's significantly cheaper, right?

If the 5820K fits their requirements too, then sure.

for editing and 3d modeling a 5960x would be a bit better than the 5930k but in games it would be the reverse cause the 5930k has bigger clock speed. and it's not a big difference it's just a waste of money, get the 5930k, some light overclock with a good voltage and you're done

As an owner of the 5930k, it's completely not worth it from a price/performance standpoint. Unless you need 40 lanes over 28 lanes from a 5820k, it's just not worth it. Then the performance improvement from a 5820k to a 5960X is still pretty slim.

With that said, if you grab a 5820k instead, you may be able to pick up a couple 980 Ti's instead, depending on the rest of your budget.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Do you really NEED the 2 cores/4 threads that the 5960X has over the 5930K? Likely you want to be honest. Go for the 5930K. Or even 5820K and 1 980 Ti for now or something. I mean, that 6GB VRAM over the 4GB.. But I dunno

i do know, 980 Ti + 5820K over 980 + 5930K any day of the week
