Posted January 15, 2016 So me and my father got into this conversation a while ago, I just wanted to share this idea that fascinated me. The ultimate game in my eyes is a realistic driving/racing game where the WHOLE USA is your playground. I'm not talking like just main roads like hoghways, I'm talking EVERY road. It would be so cool to drive to my house, or go offroading at some cool trails or drifting the streets that you grew up on. The makers of the game could use lasers to scan every road like in Assetto Corsa, using cars like Google Earth with mounted lasers to get every little bump or pothole, make it as realistic as possible. But then my father and I got into the conversation of the sheer size of files. We talked about how they would split the games into different games, or possible starting off one place and have DLC whenever you want to explore a new state or section of the United States. There would be loads of customization for vehicles as well. It will probably never happen because of the time, money, and space it would take to get that much info crammed into a video game. But it would be so fucking awesome to see it actually happen. I want your guys thoughts and ideas to go off on this too, as I love to talk about stuff like this! Posted January 15, 2016 would definitely be amazing but probably never happen. roads are constantly changing, repaved, etc, so not only are you looking at an astronomical cost of scanning every road in the US, your gonna have to scan them multiple times. not just that but compare the size of the US and the size of the gaming community, you would probably hardly ever find anyone unless your in a highly populated part of a city, since in game drive times would be almost like real life drive times. Posted January 15, 2016 GTA is large enough. Regular roads are generally a bit boring. Custom roads that don't exist in reality is better, with looping tracks that aren't entirely too long so you can customize the number of laps and don't have to complicate things in races with sectioning off different areas for every race. Having a limited amount of tracks for racing allows people to better excel at a map with more ability to practice. With an incredible amount of options for racing areas it becomes daunting to try and race at highly competitive levels. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options... Posted January 15, 2016 This could be possible to do with Google Street view and some basic terrain modeling based on height of surfaces. Laser scanning is out of question for few reasons. One that nobody could have PC to run that smoothly in many, many years. Simple laser scan has several gigabytes of data. Like what I did last spring from 3 points has 3gb worth of files. And that doesn't include rendering surfaces. Just point data and color for pixels. There's reason why it took so long to make laser scanned model of Nurburghring for iRacing. So load times, time to create each part, pure storage space it would take on server or on local. Size of the world doesn't really matter for loading times (or ram usage), the fidelity of the assets does. You're only ever loading the area around you, and the rest is streamed in, in which case it doesn't matter whether the map is 1 km² or 500km². Disk space would really be the only issue, though you'd probably run into issues with 32 bit as well, like they do in a lot of spacegames. "It's a taxi, it has a FARE METER."
