HDD vs. SSHD

So we all know SSDs are the best with booting and fast storage but if I was to build a NAS and don't have the cash for an all SSD one would I be better off going for HDD or SSHD?

The reason I ask is I don't know much about SSHDs or understand how they work so hope someone can offer some advice and help me understand them.

What kind of NAS are you building? You likely will be pushing the limit of your LAN port before you actually see any benefit from an SSHD.

Personally an all SSD NAS is something that is still future for many people. SSDs are still expensive at high capacities, although you will see them drop more and more each year.

 

That being said, i wouldnt put SSHDs in your NAS as you wont REALLY be using the on board flash storage like it is intended. I would go with regular HDD for now until the price drops for SSDs enough to afford putting them in a NAS.

If you're building a NAS you don't want SSHDs...

 

Your NAS should be HDDs. Not sure why you want a SSD NAS.

From what I understand, a sshd for pcs really doesn't make a huge difference. sshd's only work well if you do certain things a lot to the point where it saves it to the flash part. However with pcs people are typically doing a large variety of things to where it doesn't really make any difference. That said though if you had a console like the ps4 an sshd is a pretty decent investment. when my friend got a ps4 back in 2014, for his birthday i got him a 1tb sshd to replace the one it came with and it does install things much faster than before and operate faster in general.

Pretty much this. a NAS of SSDs is only something those with a large disposable income do, for like businesses since they can easily get the replaced. With how often data is being read and wrote, an SSD NAS would be a bullet to your wallet.

One thing you could perhaps do is have a HDD NAS, but have a few SSDs in for caching.

For nas just standard HDD. On a SSHD, the SSD part is just for caching, so programs temporary store data in that to quicker access, thus you see a quicker response. Once the program is done with it, then data is written back to the HDD and from the there this "quicker response" disappears. I tried a SSHD once and, it is indeed faster than a HDD, very responsive, much like a SSD. But when running Crystal DiskMark, SSD gets like 450-500MB/s read and SSHD gets about 130-150MB/s read. Not sure if this is just the hdd portion that gets tested or it includeds the caching part.

I wonder how long Linus' NAS will last. I think it's all SSDs.

Well Linus' are Enterprise grade, which has higher endurance than normal ones, so I'd imagine it would probably last longer than normal ones, although with as many as he has they would die periodically I'd imagine. Although Linus is extremely buddy-buddy with Kingston so he could probably get like 100 more for free.

Basically, sshd are regular hard drives with a large 8gb cache (instead of 64mb on regular hdds)

This , coupled with a special controller, allows the drive to "learn" and put frequently used data in it to access it much more quickly.

The advantages are pretty good, and an sshd can have much better load times on frequently used data. However, if it is data that hasn't been used in a long time, it is no longer stored in the cache and is stored on regular magnetic disks, which are usually also 5400rpm.
