What is with the PowerBall? Can someone explain why it's so popular right now? I get that the prize is like 2.5B or whatever but after taxes you get around 600M.

It varies by state. In California they take 40%, while they take more or less elsewhere.

It's a federal tax, all states regardless tax 40%+.

Especially if you get the money in installments instead of a lump sum, then they tax every single payment they make to you. Even if you take the lump sum you're going to have to have like 20 bank accounts and they'll all charge you too. Not saying ti's bad though, you could live off of a million dollars, 600M will keep 5 generations ahead of you alive.

I wouldn't want to win. It would ruin my desires to build my own success. However if any of you win, I'm looking for a small investment (~$500k) to start up my business!

I agree. It is within my personal belief that fame and fortune is never given, but earned.

as of now its 1.4 billion, and yes after taxes it would be only about 651 million if it was taken all at once.  on the other hand if one were to take it over 30 years it comes out to 996 million at about 33 million per year.

If i won it I would put 6 million into a retirement so if i ever lose the rest i can just retire and live untill i die.  I would probably give a grant to Linus Media Group so that they could maybe one day become a massive company.  And then i would also buy a replica of a destroyer or battleship from WW2 and turn it into a yacht to live in.  But i also have like 4 different ways I could spend the money.  I like to sit down for like an hour and do this stuff for fun.

Well sorry to tell you but you have a better chance of dying today than winning. :/

That's why I don't get why everyone is so hyped, they think they have a chance of winning when the odds are basically zero. Oh yeah, I meant to type 1.5B but it came out to 2.5, so I was pretty close...

USD, I mean it is a US lottery right?

yah but i'm saying that in some other currency 2.5 is probably right, and yah it's a US lottery.  What happened is that the rules for it changed and since its harder now the jackpot hasn't been won for like 13 rounds or something now,  The last record jackpot was like 500-something million

So that's why it's so popular right now? Just because it's the highest it's been?

Probably I personally wouldn't participate in any lotto at all since the chances of winning are slim anyway. The amount that you would have spent on tickets could've got you a night out at the theaters with a few good friends or a really good restaurant for example. That's what I would do, not lottery tickets.

:D Even I'm young and I won't buy into the whole fuss about lotteries in general. If I want to be swimming in cash, I will work my ass for it so I can feel proud of my hard work that it brought me. Working towards goals like that really makes you feel proud that you did work for it and not have it handed to you.
