More Threads or More GHz for gaming?

What I mean is i3 4170 vs g3258.

If I got the g3258 I could get a 212 evo for insane overclocking.

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Definitely the i3 4170 for gaming.

Even though clock speed is better, you will benefit more from the essential 4 threads on the i3 4170.

For gaming go for a minimum of 4 threads.

After that, get as much GHz as you can.

So, in other words, go for the i3.

You'd probably benefit from having the extra threads for those windows background processes whilst gaming....i3 gets the thumbs up.
