What do I need to do when going from an amd gpu to a nvdidia gpu?

make sure that the old psu will hold the card with a little room left on top. after that turn off the computer and unplug the old gpu, plug in the new one and boot up, then install the drivers for the new gpu and uninstall the old ones. Done.

You would need to delete all your old amd drivers for the gpu prefarbly with a piece of software and then remove it when your pc is off removing the screws from your case to gain access. You then put in your nvidia gpu and turn your pc on remembering to put your stuff back together. Download drivers for the new nvdia card from nvida's site and your ready to go.

First of all, what card do you have and what card are you getting?

I know it's not the actual question, but if you need advice on how to swap out the cards, you might need advice on what card to get.

Yes, yes you should upgrade the PSU. Keep in mind the R9 390 is also faster than the 970 and usually cheaper.

Why do you say upgrading from amd to nvidia, that makes it sound like amd is a 2. tier brand, when it is just as good as nvidia, and unlike nvidia amd likes to make their software open source

In terms of overall performance, AMD actually is 2nd tier. Their software also has a reputation for being sub-par, until very recently (I won't pass judgement on recent updates because I don't know too much about it).

The 390 is better than the 970 for that price point, sure, but that's an anomaly.

Now, while I do recommend the 390 to the OP, you have to have blinders on to think AMD properly competes with Nvidia's performance.

EDIT: I should add that I'm only talking about current gen hardware with current gen software. We don't know anything about how next gen's cards will compare and we don't know anything about how DX12/Vulkan/Mantle will affect this.

amd have always been as good as nvidia, when you look back in time amd where alot better than nvidia at once then nvidia became the better gpu company, amd had some bad years, but now they are on their feets again with the new software and the new gpu's, the fury beats the 980 fury x beats the 980 ti (stock) in lower tier cards amd is also just as good as nvidia. AMD has also pushed alot of new things to the gpu market that nvidia then followed up on a year after. The 290x was 5-10 fps under the 780 ti when it came out but now it is a better card. Thats why I think it's wrong to say that amd is a 2. tier brand

I like both companies.

AMD is definitely getting better, but they aren't as good as Nvidia yet.

The thing with the Fury X is that it can only ever outperform the 980ti at stock. I don't consider something like that meaningful if the overclocking involved is something that you'll get from the factory with nearly every non-reference card.

And that's their highest end card.

(The Fury is pretty much equivalent to the 980 but a bit more expensive, if I recall correctly... I may be wrong...)

Even so, this generation is pretty much the first time I've been comfortable with recommending an AMD GPU (the 390) in the entire time I've been a PC enthusiast. If they continue improving, they'll be truly competitive with Nvidia- But for now, they still need to catch up a little more.

Now, what I wish they'd put more effort into is CPUs. Their current offerings are so laughable that Intel doesn't have any meaningful competition to, well, compete against. They're promising big things for the future, but so far they haven't shown any improvement. Seriously, their top-of-the-line octa-core 5Ghz 9590 just can't manage to beat even a previous-gen i5 in nearly any workload.

But that rant has nothing to do with GPUs, so... Oh well...

Oh well...

The fury is quit a bit better in 1440p and 4k. right now there is really no reason to buy a 970 or 980 from nvidia unless you got a g-sync screen, and if you are thinking about getting a g-sync screen take a look at free-sync it has gotten alot better and it is 100$+ cheaper than g-sync. AMD has always had alittle disatvanges over Nvidia since they make most of their software open source so if they come up with something new Nvidia can just put that software on their cards, When Nvidia comes up with something new AMD can't put in on their cards since it is not open source. If you are building a rig in a small case then the 980 ti can be really hard to pick over the fury x since the 980 ti will get really really hot and the fury x will stay cool, while the 980 ti might slow down to keep the temps down.

For me AMD is that guy that shares everything he has and Nvidia is a guy that doesn't want to share anything with anyone. But both companies makes great gpu's.
