What can I do to keep temps down on an overheating graphics card

My r9 290 died a few weeks ago, and last night I put in a 6770 that I borrowed from a friend.  After about 15 minutes in a game, MSI Afterburner showed 100c for the gpu temp so I closed the game right away.  It's been idling at around 40c - 45c.

This is the card i'm using

 

Is there anything I can do to keep it cool?

Ramp up your fan speeds to 100%

Is your pc dusty? If it is, clean it up by blowing it with a compressed air can. Dust can affect cooling, which makes your pc hotter. Also make sure that you have good air flow in your case. The best is to have an intake directly in front of the gpu to keep it cool and an exhaust to get the heat from the gpu out.

that is still really hot, but stable.

 

Look into getting more fans for your case

Are you sure the card's cooler is mounted properly or it has proper thermal paste on it(stuff that isn't dried out and decent quality)?

I'm not too sure, should I try taking off the heatsink and re-applying thermal paste?

take off any overclock..test it..if its still to hot..more fans...and maybe reapply thermal paste to gpu

Dust off all the case if you can, and try to add some fans as suggested above. I Would try to reapply the thermal paste beacause that seems to be the problem (or at least it was mine with the CPU i7 3770 running at over 90° on stock cooler. Changed the Thermal paste and now it is stable under 65 on AIDA). If it works i would try to set a different Fan Curve for the CPU, not a silent one but a more aggressive one (But that depends on your taste)

There's no overclock.  The airflow in my case was fine for my xfx r9 290, so I might reapply thermal paste. I did turn up the fan speed already for the case though

90c is considered hot. Is the gpu dusty? If so, then cleaning it will reduce the temps by a bit. For me, I try not to get my gpu over 80c, even though it is safe for the gpu. You can still run the gpu at 90c, just keep an eye on it to make sure it does not overheat.

Does the card have thermal paste applied? The 6770 should be VERY cool as it's a lower-end card. My 6850 ran at 65*C with no airflow

I put new thermal paste on.. And now, instead of 45c at idle and 95c while gaming, it's running at 30c idle and 60c in games!  I guess that was the problem
