Buying a GTX 980 in 2016?

Luke

So i may be buying a 1440p Gsync monitor off someone for a decent deal and they also offered to sell me a GTX 980 for $450 CAD ($318 USD). I currently have a R9 290X and won't be able to use the Gsync feature and could of course sell my R9 290X so this is a tempting offer but i figured i'd get some opinions.

At that price, I'd say the 980 is worth getting since you're getting a GSync monitor.

That seems like a pretty good deal. As someone who has been eyeing 980ti on newegg.ca every now and then, it pains me to see a 980 for that price xD

I'm buying one, the 980 is an awesome card.

Thanks guys =)

I was hesitant because i'm not sure what 2016 will bring for graphics cards but i'm guessing there will be some huge improvements with 14nm etc but realistically i don't think i'd be buying a new card at retail price anyway so this seems like my best option. Thanks!

Not only is the 980 not a considerable upgrade to a 290x, the 980 is overpriced by itself. The best perf/$ cards at the high end are 390, Fury and 980 ti. Everything else is overpriced. I'd wait for Pascal if you can't afford a 980 ti right now.

EDIT: Nevermind. I thought $318 was the asking price for the monitor and you were getting a brand new 980

Your misinformation campaign is getting old. Please visit some benchmarks and actually read the opening post, the purchase price should be of interest to you.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I misread and though that was the amount he was going to pay for the monitor.

It's a substantial upgrade.

No. It may be slightly faster, but that's all. The 290X is the same as the 390X apart from the memory.

It costs less than a retail 390, and is faster... I do not see the issue with him going with the card.

I feel like this reply would only make sense if i was buying a GTX 980 new. I'll be paying about $150 (after i sell my 290x) for a minor to medium upgrade and the ability to use Gsync with the new monitor.

Edit: Nvm i quoted to late and you correct yourself. NP!

Like I've said visit some benchmarks, there's a reason I'm getting a 980 myself. I actually researched it.

I have. There's very little difference at 1440p.

Between a 290x and a 980, look harder.

A couple percent doesn't become a big difference because I stare at it.

*sigh*

Did you read it's a Gsync monitor? I'm on my phone so unfortunately can't link Digital foundrys multiple videos show a increase in performance from a 290x to a 980. At 1440 a 390x and a 980 trade blows, not a 290x.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

GSync has nothing to do with the performance, and I already acknowledged it.

The 290X and 390X are basically the same card.

The OP has a fucking GSYNC monitor! Why would they get a AMD card?

And no, they're not the same. The performance of the 290x is in line with a 390, not a 390x. PLEASE research this and leave this.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
