To large a PSU?

GIR385
Go to solution Solved by vanished,

That meaning it might draw to much power on occasion right? Will this be dangerous to the components?

It won't draw too much power.  It just means that if in fact your system does only require about 150 W under load, then the 600 W is excessive and thus will be operating at much less than its rated efficiency.  It won't be harmful to anything though.

I have a 600watt PSU. This is an incredibly high amount of watts in comparison to what I need. I'm concerned: Will having this larger than needed PSU effect performance?

Here's what I'm running:

AMD Athlon X4 860K

EVGA GeForce GTX 750TI

MSI A78M E35 V2

1TB 7200 Spindle HDD

Intel 320Series 160GB SSD

8GB Crucial Balistx Sport (Low Profile)

3x120MM LED fans

1x80MM fan

PSU Calculator says it will require 302 Watts, and recommend a 430Watt PSU.

Will having such a large PSU effect performance? Will it effect anything?

Power supplies do not affect performance.

You will not get more FPS with a 1500W 80+ Platinum PSU than you would with an adequate PSU of lower efficiency.

No, its fine. The only time it would effect performance is if the PSU is too small, but you would have bigger problems at that point.

It will not impact performance at all.  If anything, you are running it at peak efficiency since most PSUs are rated most efficient at 50% load.

I have an AX1200i PSU which checked recently if it does work and it does. Yes it's overkill for my first system which will draw up to 500 watts at full load at stock speeds. I intend to overclock the system too. This means that my PSU will be at peak efficiency since it will be 50% or more.

No, it doesn't ruin performance at all. You're also not getting anywhere near 302 watts so don't use PSU calculators ;) (think more like 150W)

As mentioned already, the system pulls ~150w at load and less during idle. It's far from running at the psu's peak efficiency.

That was posted after me; I was basing that on his initial claim of about 300 W draw

No, the system only pulls as much power as needed.
