CES 2016 Displays

SolarNova

So, so far the Displays iv seen reported on at CES are all rather disappointing.

They are all still 55"+ monstrosities :(

Was really hoping for at least some more sensible sized OLED's to be being shown, around the 37"-50" range.

That said, LG has yet to show their 43UH6500. So long as its OLED (and not LCD) and not a crappy budget OLED this smaller screen may well be worth looking at for PC gamers imo. I know I sure will. Whilst I would much rather see a 5120x2160 Ultra wide 46" display with Adaptive Sync, a 43" 4k OLED display , even if lacking Adaptive sync, may persuade me to part with my Plasma, so long as the price isn't crazy high. Though I unfortunately suspect its LCD :(

Still at least HDR / Wide Colour Gamut is a thing now.

What are your thoughts on the CES 2016 displays ?

Looking forward to anything in particular ?

no OLED screen should be used with a PC though

so it doesnt matter for gamers...

but yes I really want some ultrawide 40"+ displays, because the 105" ultrawide TV is a bit too expensive for me...

Is there a person on the planet that actually buys TV's because of what they see in CES?

why is OLED a bad idea for PCs?

because burn in

and the taskbar/start button are there almost 90% of the time, so it would stay there while you game

People say Plasma is bad for PC, and yet here I am using a plasma for the last 4 years with ZERO issues.

OLED is fine for PC

Use screen savers

Hide ur task bar

use the Screens inbuilt power save features to turn of static display after X minutes.

people just need to relearn things from the times of CRT's. It isn't hard and is NOT inconvenient at all.

plasma is bad in general, but later models got burn in fixed, so you probably got the later one.

Oh, I didn't realize OLEDs were more susceptible to burn in.

OLEDs 'were' highly susceptible to burn in.

now though, not so much.

I'm hoping for more AMVA+ being shown off.  It's reached the levels of IPS in terms of color fidelity and the contrast for blacks is gorgeous while maintaining no IPS Glow, because AMVA.

Not this time. The tricks from the CRT/Plasma days wont work for OLED, screensavers are of no use in preventing burn-in on OLED. OLED burn-in doesn't come from displaying continuous images for too long like Plasma, the OLEDs degrade every second they are being used. Having a screensaver doesn't prevent OLED burn-in, it only pauses it. Things like the taskbar and red "X" in the corner of windows will eventually burn in due to how much screen time they get.

Well Dell has 30" OLED monitor at CES. But in typical fashion ..its $5k. Because they can lol. No competition.

Also Lenovo has OLED options in their new laptops.

So yea. OLED for PC ..its a thing, and it will 'eventually' save us from the apocalyptically bad technology that is LCD that's been flooding the market since its release.

The first 4K monitors at CES 2 years ago like the ASUS PQ321Q were $3500, but it went down pretty quickly. Hopefully the same will happen with OLED.

Well it already has tbh, but only with the large displays.

Personally I was just hoping we would see more smaller ones at CES.

I unfortunately expect that the last sizes OLED will come out in will be the sizes I want, 40"-50".
