I'm always wondering what affects your ping in games, is it up or down or neither?

Both. Users on the network using bandwidth makes your ping increase so does bad servers and far away ones. Happens sometimes. But uploading effects the ping the worst

You always want lower ping, and there are a few things that come into play. Your connection strength and location of your PC to the location of a server are the two main factors.

I'm always wondering what affects your ping in games, is it up or down or neither?

Usually has to do with distance, packet loss, and goodput.

Your connection rate or bandwidth actually has nothing to do with it. Unless your connection speed is lower than what is required of a single packet of game data having more will not lower it. These are actually very very small.

 

The single biggest factor is distance, ping is a measurement of time so that makes complete sense. Other factors are: connection quality, contention ratio, load of your road side cabinet etc. One of the reasons why a business connection cost so much more is they have a lower contention ratio, and higher QoS priority too. Who is using internet bandwidth locally on your network too effects it but that's easy to deal with, use a big stick and hit them.

 

Also the lower your ping gets the more jitter becomes a real issue for online gaming.

You always want lower ping, and there are a few things that come into play. Your connection strength and location of your PC to the location of a server are the two main factors.

Unless your having packet loss issues on your local network to the modem, or are lacking the bandwidth to support said game then I really don't think you need to worry about ping. I mean unless it's like 150+... then yeah you probably have packet loss issue or maybe a bad cable..

 

I use http://www.pingtest.net/ to verify that you don't have any packet loss.

(requires special permissions to work correctly both with JAVA and windows/firewall)

(Update I think it really only works on IE11 I can never get it to work correctly on chrome.. maybe adblock is effecting my permissions)

Ok, so this is the real life scenario that really happened to me. For about 1 years I have been playing bf4 usually I got a ping of >225 on American server, and >300 on German/eu server but I upgraded my modem to 150 mbps bandwidth and my ping reduced to 200-203 at the same us server, and 256 on eu server. Was it because of my modem, or my ISP?

Probably the modem, good modems these days you need to buy.. I use a Arris with an asus router + I use cat6 ethernet cable and my ISP uses COAX to deliver my service. When I signed up they gave me a DOCS2.0 modem when it was required to have a DOCS3.0 to even get the speeds I was paying for... And I hate to say it but this is a common thing for them to do. So yeah I bet the modem u have now doesn't even support the full bandwidth you're paying for if it's one they gave you.. 

 

Honestly if I were you I'd get a modem that supports your internet speed + make sure it's a DOCS3.0 and I'll guarantee you your ping will drop to like the 20's.. here is one for like 70? it's like a step down from mine..

I'm using cisco + I forgot what brand was my router, with a coax, I'm also using cat 5 I know it's kinda not up to date, but hey it works. I also don't got my Internet speed on par with my bandwith, I'm getting like 37.5 down and 1.7 up so it's not really that good, but it was much better than my last modem which is 9 down and 0.2 up. And download on steam is like 1.6 mbps tops
