HP OEM OS working with a new board?

Hi guys.

I swapped motherboards in my "used to be HP Elite" a few hours ago. After connecting the HDD and starting the system to install my copy of Windows 8 I got because I will loose my license by swapping boards, my computer booted up into my old Windows 7. I'm already prepared for a clean install I expected to be forced to do. Did I waste money on a Windows 8 license? Would I possibly be able to use my old Windows 7 (I don't want to, just asking)?

Windows 7 turned out to be non-activated. (=useless) MAYBE I could use an upgrade key. Then I would have to do stuff everytime I will have to reinstall.

I'm almost sure I will install new Win 8 and format the HDD in the process. All the stuff is backed up on my external HDD.

The key doesn't work. I have an upgrade key but I don't care. I don't want to go through multiple stages of reinstalling in the future. Win 8 Pro clean install it is.
