Tell these newbs

Just sayin they probebly forgot to enable adBlock clicked on the wrong download button and downloaded a virus

In all fairness I have never got a virus via piracy.

However, have you heard about that GTA V leak 60GB of viruses thing?

tbh i am using pirated version of windows since windows 7, the only windows i have legal are vista and xp

I then used windows 7 beta and RC, upgrade the RC to an illegal copy of win 7 ult, everything worked fine, even the upgrades

then i upgraded to win8.1, and now i upgraded for free to a legal win10 copy, via microsoft updates.

the only occasion i woud say to get a legal copy, is if you are living on a country with very strict law for pirating, like UK

or if you are traveling a lot, because the are times that the can check your laptop for pirated products.

it happened to me once, but i was warned by a friend before going to the airport and got away,  i have installed on the laptop a spare HDD with linux mint i had laying around,

and got  my files on a cloud

The site has changed....

Cons:

-> Illegal, and saying it on a public forum is double moronic.

-> No support

-> Possible injection of undetectable viruses, key logger, and other malware. Windows built-in encryption system can also be compromised allowing back door access.

-> Possible of undetectable security holes making your computer a zombie (that is that your computer looks like it is operating fine, but someone can remotely use your computer (without you knowing) to execute an attack on a website or company (usually DDoSing). Depending on where you live, YOU could be considered responsible for the attack, as you didn't do your due diligence in protecting yourself.

-> Due to the above 2 points, if found out, expect everyone on this forum to pull out of helping you out on any of your issues you need help with. Why? Too many times, people that faces with system issues, come to forum asking for help, a lot of help comes in, then nothing really works, because in reality, because of the 2 previous points where system files have been modified, you just waste everyones time, because there is no fix. So, people don't like wasting their time, and will get very angry if found out.

I would like to remind you also, that Windows is an Operating System. It OPERATES your SYSTEM. Without one, your computer is nothing more than a door stop. An Operating System is just about the most complicated piece of software you install on your computer. All Adobe suite of software, Office, all your games, anything you install on it, COMBINED is child plays compared to an Operating System. It is for a VERY good reason why it takes thousands and thousands of engineers working around the clock on it, why you are limited in choice (MacOS, Linux based OS, and Windows), why MacOS is based on Unix, and not in home kernel like Windows. Every decision of Linux is super carefully taken, because there is a lot to consider, and any OS, has something more important: people data at risk. Imagine if Windows or Linux gets stuck somewhere and instruct your HDD/SSD to write crap all over your data, essentially corrupting all your data on your drive, with no way of recovery? Not fun. It cost A LOT of money to do the back end, and that is what is the hardest. It also requires not only experienced, but SUPER talented and knowledge engineers, and I can assure you, they are VERY few of them. Hence why Microsoft, Google, is paying the BIG BIG BIG bucks to not loose them. Linus Torvalds (creator of Linux) if he pases away, much like any of the big engineers of any companies that make their own OS, has serious issues. Like it would be devastating. Everything you see as a user, when touching Windows, is like 10% of an Operating System.

So, amongst all the software you can pirate, the Operating System is the one you don't want to touch.

Another reason why you should not pirate:

-> No excuse. You have no excuse. Considering the number of people that works on it, and the cost the operating system is being sold to you, Windows is virtually free already. A game is what? 60$. Ok. It is plagued with bugs, has performance issues, and how long do you play for it? 1 year at most? You'll tired and move to something else. Windows cost what? 100$. How long do you use it for? 3 years minimum. Because there are no other Windows bellow 3 years. So it will be either 3 years or 6 years, depending if you want to skip a version of Windows or not.

Say 3 years. Also considering that it runs all the time on your system, that is ~33$ per year. That is less than a recent AAA game on sale. That is a tad more expensive than a fancy fan in your computer case. So please. Don't tell me you don't have the money. You do. If you can afford that fancy gaming graphics card, you can afford Windows.

-> More no excuse. You have free alternative to Windows. Linux based OS are a solid choice to consider. With Steam running on Linux now, it is easier to find and install Linux support games for your enjoyment. Plus, you can find interpreters like Wine for Linux based OSs, to allow you to run your Windows programs and games on your OS. Sure it isn't perfect, but it is a free, and supported by a very strong community.

So what are your friends excuse?

Be legit! Support the developers! Be safe! Do the right thing! And get the best possible experience, and not have to worry about your Windows deactivating or crapping on you while you type your term paper and fail your class, because an integrated exploits from your pirated copy of Windows was executed, or Microsoft clamping down (and they are very much so), on pirated copied of Windows with Windows updates. And keep in mind that Windows 10 forces updates. So you'll be in for a nasty surprise.

If you are still not convinced, talking about how to pirate or how to acquire illegal obtain software, any of them, on this forum can pretty get your account baned. We have 0 tolerance for this, not to mention that it is illegal (and I don't mean: oh just because it not right. I am talking about protecting ourself from serious cases of lawsuit from 1 to multiple companies. So we protect ourself.)

Wait airports check for piracy now?

YES! And you can go to jail if any pirated content is found (but usually a high fine, and a headache). From movies, to software. So, while it might be legal to backup a movie on your system because it doesn't have a DVD drive, you can be screwed over if the country you are in and they do the check, sees it, by law, as illegal action. But that is a different topic. But yes, you can be arrested if found out. They ask you for receipt for all your paying software you have acquired.

Wait they arrest by the local law of their country (not your country) on DVD rips... Better run Dareks Boot And Nuke and reinstall Windows on my laptop

So do they like rip out the hard drive/SSD and put it into a caddy to find out?

Depending on the country laws, yes, it is possible. Well it is simple. If you cooperate, they might ask you you to login, and then they'll check your files. (yes, you'll miss the plane in any case, so they'll spend quite a long time on your PC). Depending on the local laws they might ask you to decrypt files found to be encrypted as well, and you can be arrested just for refusing.

All in all, it is important to know the laws in the country/state/province your plane lands.

Usually you get a fine (really high one), if you have been very cooperative, nice (even thought the agent might not be against you) and there is nothing huge. If you pull a rebel, then expect you to need to call a lawyer, because they can make your life a living hell. They can also seize your laptop, and you can pretty much be assured you will never see it again as it can be considered as possible evidence (and of course, still be fined)
