Tired of USB Mic hiss! What should I get?

Current setup: Rode PSA1 + Samson SP01 + Samson C01U + Samson PS04
 
Budget: $100 Amazon Gift Card + hopefully no more than $100 additional (not trying to spend $200)
 
Trying to solve: Even with the level in Windows set to 0 and the USB cable plugged into a powered USB hub I am getting a hiss. Hiss does not increase in volume until I go past 72 in Windows level. No matter what I try it does not change frequency at all, just the same constant level hiss. I have no gain and no effects are enabled. I am guessing it is just the reality of a USB condenser microphone. USB cable does not appear to be of low quality.
 
Additional requirements:
-No matter what I need a new shock mount the SP01 elastic is totally shot. Apparently you can't get replacement elastic.
-All new items in black please. Didn't realize how distracting/ugly the silver Samson stuff was going to be till it was too late.

Auray SHM-SCM1 ($25 BHPhotoVideo.com) (Can purchase replacement elastic!) (According to B&H staff it fits the AT2020)

Does the exact same thing. No change in frequency or level. That is originally were I had it till I read that was the problem and I should plug it into a hub.

 

Edit: Even had the cable going past all the computer power cables and power strip. Still no change in the hiss volume or frequency.

 

Edit2: Even tried the front USB port and routing the USB cable as far away from the computer as possible. Still no change.

You have dirty wall power. Buy an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) or a power conditioner. I don't have any suggestions since I haven't researched them.

I doubt a cheap interface like the Behringer will have a clean enough power supply to rectify the issue. Audio interfaces are known to give off the same noise when supplied with dirty power.

 

edit: Or it could be a coincidence and both the powered USB hub and your computer's PSU are crap. What's your PSU model?

edit2: Or it could be that your Samson C01U is defective. Most USB microphones at this price don't have the issue of hiss.

edit3: Just read that although UPSes are intended to output a pure sine wave (clean), cheap UPSes tend to give off lower quality power, even almost a square wave. A power conditioner is probably better for your needs.

edit4: Although the problem is much more likely to be your C01U because dirty AC power tends to give off a hum, not a hiss, and a hiss is characteristic of poor quality resistors in DC electronics like in microphones.

I didn't think it could be dirty power because I have a Corsair AX850 but I could totally go down to Microcenter and buy a CyberPower Systems CP1350AVRLCD to see what happens then just return it. That unit has a Simulated Sine Wave. The only power conditioners Microcenter has in stock are REALLY expensive and I don't want to buy something that heavy (return shipping cost) and have it not work due to something as simple as a defective microphone.

Dirty wall power, not dirty PSU power, although dirty PSU power is possible with very bad PSUs. Trying out the UPS sounds like a good idea.

 

If you decide to get a new microphone setup, I would spend more money on the audio interface and less on the microphone. I suggest the Mackie Blackjack as the interface. Cheap dynamic microphones are much better than cheap condenser microphones, and since the Blackjack has the gain to handle them, I suggest the Monoprice dynamic microphone, http://www.monoprice.com/product?pg_no2=2&c_id=115&cp_id=11502&cs_id=1150202&p_id=600020&sortby=&period=&rating=&seq=1&format=4#feedback which I've heard compares favorably to the SM57/SM58. If you really want a condenser microphone, you could get the Behringer C-1 (which is the Samson C01 rebranded).

 

I don't know anything about shockmounts, so I can't give any suggestions there. Since the Kirlin cable you linked has extremely good reviews, it's probably fine. But the company doesn't seem well-known in the audio world, and Monoprice XLR cables should be a safe choice.

Did a bit a research and I will go to Microcenter Tomorrow and get a CyberPower CP1350PFCLCD which has a pure sine wave. Says 1 in stock so hopefully I don't have to buy the higher output model. I wanted a UPS anyways for my FreeNAS server which this unit is compatible with so hopefully this works.

UPDATE!

 

So, I got the 1500VA version of that UPS because they didn't have the 1350VA version but I got the higher end version for the same price as the one I wanted! I can't really return it now that I got $40 off since I already wanted one anyways.

 

Deals aside I am still getting a hiss / static sound. No change at all.

 

I think it is just that it is a USB mic. Notice the difference in this video between the AT2020XLR and the AT2020USB. Notice how the XLR is perfect and the USB has the same hiss I am getting on my C01U.

Just know that it's not an inherent problem with all USB microphones. The only differences between XLR microphones powered by a USB audio interface and a USB microphones with in-case preamps and and A/D converters are that 1. there aren't XLR cables separating the microphone from the preamp/converter, and 2. you can't choose what preamp/converter you want when you buy a USB microphone because you're stuck with whatever's built in.

 

Also keep in mind that most people who use these USB microphones are not getting a lot of noise like you're getting. I can clearly hear the hiss in the video you posted, but I can't hear any appreciable noise in videos which other people post about the 2020USB. I definitely don't hear constant hiss with my Samson Meteor.

Just to conclude this thread I got a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and an Audio Technica AT2020 XLR and everything is perfect. No more hiss at all, even at 100% mic level and 100% headphone volume I am getting zero hiss. If I bring the mic level down to 0 I hear nothing like I am not even listening to the mic input, like it should be. I am even using the same USB cable that I was with the C01U so it wasn't that.

I'm glad that worked out for you. Any reason why you got the Solo instead of the Blackjack? There's a reason I recommended the Blackjack :P

an alternative solution is to get an audio interface which will give you stable, high quality audio and room for expansion and then buy an xlr dynamic microphone, you cant go wrong with a shure sm58
