In the most extreme cases many scammers set up fake ATM's that when you put in your details and walk away with your money, or an error message, will then take that ATM and the information that has been stored on a drive somewhere in there. But I doubt that is what happened to your parents xD

If they do a lot of purchases online: run very thorough AV and Malwarebytes scans while in safe mode, check all the extentions/add-ons for what ever browser(s) they use and make sure to delete/remove any that you do not recognize as being safe. Make sure they know to never purchase anything from a site that doesn't have a secure, encrypted connection, and to never give anyone their card or personal information through any communications: email, phone, text, whatever. If they don't have a PayPal account, get them set up with one and tell them to only ever make purchases with their PayPal account so that they have that extra layer of protection. Other than than, idk what to tell you.

Did you hear about the ATMs in Germany that ran windows XP, and were hacked using autorun malware on a flashdrive?

If they don't shop online much but use in stores, most times it's fairly low level stuff where employees or people place inline data loggers on the card terminal that collects data like pin and card numbers.
