Rebuilding PC for college NEED HELP

nkucz
Go to solution Solved by slasher0161,

Probably best sitting on what you currently have until you see the work load and find out if your system is falling behind, having now seen what your current setup is. The only thing with graphics design will be if the programs you use prefer opencl or cuda based acceleration. What you must realize is these courses they have to cater to the masses and your current system is better than what most have, if you need a balls to walls system the college will let you know.

For gpu I would keep the 660 for now and wait. especially with 9000 series so close.

So I'm a senior in High School this year and next year will be going to college and Majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Graphic Design. Right now I use my pc to play games, photo editing, video editing, some 3d rendering and also web page design (my personal favorite). I'm not sure what to expect for a work load in college but want a computer that will help me get stuff done fast while still being good for gaming and of course I'm going for sex appeal.

Current PC:

i5 3570k (Stock)

ASrock z77 Pro 3 (Hate it)

8gb of ddrs 1600mhz G.Skill Ripjaws

MSI Twin Frozr II OC edition GTX 660 2gb

Rosewill Capstone 550w Modular (Hate it)

1tb WD Blue 7200rpm

Fractal Define R4 Case (Definitely keeping in love with it)

I originally was going to keep my i5 3570k and get a MSI z77 MPOWER motherboard 16gb of ddr3 ram, a kraken x40 and my favorite which I will definitely get a silverstone 750w modular psu and a 760. However, after getting help from other forums on the build I was recommended to get a z79 motherboard and i7 processor keep my video card and do the other things? Or should I go with Haswell? What kind of work can I expect CS majors?

Thanks a bunch

PS: Forgot to mention I will be minoring in Graphic Design, which is probably a big factor

Intel i5 3570K || Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB FE || 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 1600MHz || ASRock Z77 Pro 3 || WD Caviar Blue 1TB || Noctua NH-U12S || Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX Sound Card || Fractal Define R4 || Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I REV 4.2 Wireless Network Card

ASUS VC239H Monitor || Corsair Strafe Cherry MX Red || Logitech G Pro || Philips SHP9500 w/ V-MODA BoomPro Mic || Reflex Lab Pro 36 Heavy Mouse Pad || Google Nexus 6P 128GB

You don't need the 2011 socket processor, I think that for you a 4770k would be optimal. Even though you're doing a bit of everything, a 4770k can keep up with that and the 2011 processors are too expensive, in your case it would be overkill I think. 4770k + 7950 (better and cheaper than the 760). You can also wait for the 9xxx serie, but a 7950 is still fine.

I do quite a bit of 3D and a 3570k is doing the job fine. My next build will include a 4770k, because the i5 can limit a bit sometime. However, I don't feel the need for a 2011 processor anytime soon, the 4770k is perfect for a video/3d editing/rendering usage, and for gaming too.

Your current setup is still fine and I don't think you'd fine the difference that incredible getting a new setup at the moment. Your CPU is fine, your RAM is fine, your case, HDD is fine. You could get a 4770k, but depending on how intensively you're actually using the 'heavy' programs, the difference might not be what you expect for the price difference.

Not for another 3-5 years as far as I am concerned. There are people here who are happy with Core 2 Quads.

Honestly you are still good.  Maybe upgrade to 9000 series GPU when they come out (wicked OpenCL peformance) and get a SSD.  You certainly don't need a complete overhaul though.

Maybe use the extra money to get some really nice monitors.

Just get a ssd.

Why such an expensive mobo? What's the use of it?

I don't think you'd need more ram. Get more when you actually run out.

If you're willing to pay $200 for looks, it's your money. Just know it won't affect your performance at all.
