So basically my English teacher and I are at a disagreement, friendly argument and all. Pls vote

If "Data" is referring to the name of the character in Star Trek, yes that video clip solves it all.  But if it is referring to "Data" as in RAW unprocessed information, some pronounce it "Day-Ta" and others "Dat-Ta" which is often cited as the correct way.

But you do not know the circumstances of the disagreement. They could be arguing which one is said more often. Day-Ta, or Dat-ta. In which case, one could be wrong if the other can prove, with statistical data (ha, get it?) that X way of saying it is more commonly accepted. While both ways of pronouncing the word is indeed correct, whether or not one is used more than the other could still be the cause of the disagreement.

if ur disagreement is which is most popular, then that will depend entirely on the geographic location.

 

In the UK I would say Day-ta is most common.

I personally use both, If im talking very informally ill say 'dah-ta' ..or due to my accent ill not pronounce the T and say da-ah.

 

But if im asking something a little more formally ill say something like 'that's what the Day-Ta says".

I say it both ways depending on what the subject it it, computers I say dayta when in science or math I say data.
