Using an SSD as a portable drive

I was wondering how suitable an SSD would be to be used as a portable drive for large file transfers between PCs? I was reduced to taking some videos round to a friend's house on a really slow USB 2.0 drive the other day, so I wondered if it would be safe to take an SSD instead?

Basically the question is: would carrying an SSD in a pocket for an extended period in no other casing damage it?

Probably, yes. Pockets tend to get a buildup of junk so you would want to purchase an external enclosure (you can get a USB 3.0 one for about $20AUD on eBay).

 

To prevent damage, go with the enclosure. You won't regret it.

Just get a USB 3.0 External HDD.... Western Digital has some good ones.

Arent there SSD external Drives so i don't see a problem

I find that lint and stuff like that builds up in my pockets and it could get into the SATA connector. I'm not sure if it happens to everyone, but it happens to me.

If your doing really large transfers I would suggest setting up a hotswap system for an SSD if you want to make things as efficient as possible to not have a USB bottleneck in any way.

Not proper SSD external drives. It is much cheaper to just buy an SSD of your desired capacity and get an enclosure.

Well then just put it in a bag or something or make sure your pockets are clean.

Yea, I suppose. That was just me but then again I don't keep anything in my pockets.

I was wondering specifically because I have a redundant 60GB Corsair Force drive that I don't really have an in system use for, and I have to give my friends fairly large files relatively often (due to them using my phone to film stuff in slow motion for physics mostly)
