I killed 4 HDD's... now what?

Hey all,

So I killed 4 4tb seagate hdd's...

Somehow I managed to supply +12V to the +5V pins... Oops.

Can I replace the controller board, or is the whole drive toast?

All important data was backed up, but still 4 4tb drives is like $600.

Good news is that 2 of the drives are still under warranty until mid-January 2016.

Thank,

Josh

You might want to check out those connectors your using to power those drives then before trying more drives, but in general if the PCB board got fried you can potentially get a replacement of the same model of drive and try but it's hard to say if it will work or not.

Generally speaking, warranty does not cover accidental damage. Hopefully they're feeling generous.

you might be able to replace the controller boards. tough that would require some super steady handywork. also, i have no idea where you could even buy something as specific as that!

anyway, if you do decide to try a recovery operation, make a thread out of it on the forum! i would love to see how it goes :P

Two drives failing simultaneously? I'd be suspicious.

I have no idea if that kind of repair is possible DIY, but even if it is possible, where would you get a controller board for your specific drive. On the bright side, now you can make a tesla turbine out of the disk platters. :P

Not me. Go walk into any large datacenter, they'll have a few a day.

I'm sure that's true, but it's hardly relevant to a thread about a home user with two 'failed' drives.

You most likely CAN buy replacements boards, they should be easy to find on sites like Aliexpress, when you search for the drives name(example: STBD6000100) and you should find replacement boards.
