drawbacks of mineral oil cooling

what are the drawbacks, other than cleaning and moving, as it will be stationary, and wont be upgraded for at least 2 years.

 

also, how do you test if something is rubberized, or rubber coated.

stickers fall off voiding warranty

 

That and having to fix the tank every so often if it cracks... ITS A PAIN! And take 4 days to travel to a LAN party that's about 100 meters away because of its dam weight.

Anything else to add anyone?

Leaks and don't even mess with any kind of rubber in a mineral oil PC. It might look like the other and pretty soon you have chunks everywhere

It is pointless and expensive. Just get a goldfish and a cheap tank and call it a night.

That and having to fix the tank every so often if it cracks... ITS A PAIN! And take 4 days to travel to a LAN party that's about 100 meters away because of its dam weight.

Leaks and don't even mess with any kind of rubber in a mineral oil PC. It might look like the other and pretty soon you have chunks everywhere

Have you SEEN a 10 gallon fish tank? They are much smaller than they sound. It's not big enough to submerge an ATX mobo. Just don't do it. It's not worth the hassle. Guaranteed you will get fed up with it almost immediately.

Oil everywhere. It likes to climb itself out of the case and down the wires. 

 

If literally anything goes wrong, you are emptying the tank, pulling the parts out, letting them hang dry and then fixing it. A simple ram switch goes from a two minute swap to a full day of emptying, cleaning and refilling. 

 

Awesome concept. Looks really cool. Not worth it in my opinion.

If you really want to go for it I guess you can as others have said there is a fair bit of hassle with a tank of oil, one tip though for those glass tanks, make sure you sit it on a very flat surface or sheet of insulation styrofoam, if there is any bend/sag or flex to the table surface it can stress the glass in the bottom of the tank.

 

As for testing rubber ideally a small container with a bit of mineral oil with the material for a week will tell you most times if it can survive.

I feel like a lot of the fun of an oil cooled PC is in having a cool tank. Seems like a rimmed standard 10 is about the least cool tank...

You could probably use contact cleaner on everything but the fans with moderate success. The cleaner would likely strip the oil from the bearings indiscriminately and make them fail sooner.

This could of course be avoided by using a pump for circulation instead of the fans but that robs you of the cool slow motion oiled fan thing.
