Got a Modmic and it sucks

So i bought a Modmic and upon using it it egnerates lots of static and what sounds like a helicopter in my friends ears when I converse with them on skype. I have tried the never failing USB sound card fix with no luck at all. I have emailed NCIX that I would like to return the mic and im wondering what other options do I have. At first i was using the sony PS3 USB wireless headset but a friend misplaced the USB stick rendering the headset useless. Paired with my Modmic right now i have ATH M50X headphones and I like them. What are your suggestions for my situation. Should I troubleshoot more with the Modmic, get a new headset or try to find another standalone mic. 

 

PS I have a mechanical keyboard so I dont want the mic to pick up my clicking all the time.

Any shotgun or cardioid mic. Shotgun is preferable as it is the most direct (AKA super cardioid).

also, get a soundcard with a noise cancellation function (basically the card comes with a little "dock" with a mic in it that helps reduce background noise)

 

i know creative have one of these

PS I have a mechanical keyboard so I dont want the mic to pick up my clicking all the time.

 

 

 

Mics are designed to pick up sounds. If you dont want it to pick up background noise or keyboard and mouse clicks then you need to eliminate those sounds. You can do things to reduce the sounds but it will still be picked up. As for what mic you should get, get whatever usb mic you want that is in your budget then do a basic setup. Lots of info can be found in the audio sub forums on this topic :)

Hm, that´s strange. My brother owns a Modmic as well and i can´t complain about the voice quality as we are speaking in TeamSpeak right now. I mean it´s nothing extraodinary, but good enough (i know it has a high pricetag). You could try the mic on different programs (TeamSpeak, Audacity etc.) and see if there are differences. Other than that, mess around with your soundcards settings (even more?)

When you decide to RMA the modmic, there are still some alternatives.

Linus has always been recommending the Sony ECMCS3.CE7 (don´t quote me on that)

V-Moda also offers a detatchable mic 

So does Zalman with the Zm-Mic1

 

They all have good reviews, so you might want to check them out.

Ya its a very expensive mic for what it seems to do. I have tried many programs all with the same output of terrible audio quality.

If you wanted permanent solution get a AT 2050 and preamp but that is like $200. Linus did a video on it

In this review the mod mic sucked.  It did a good job of not picking up background noise, but that's it.  The Sony mic was much better, and it's only $15 or so.  If your headphones have a detachable cable the Vmodo BoomPro mic sounds much better as well.

The modmics seem to have weird relationships with certain hardware. They work fantastically with very low noise in the Xonar cards but they really high noise in the Soundblaster Z range of cards. Because its a powered condenser mic it sometimes doesn't work well with everything. You can get fantastic results out of it but you have to match it with hardware it likes. I only found this out having used the mic onboard, with a Xonar and with a Soundblaster Z, the later being the only one that produce static but with the exact same microphone. Further investigation has shown they do have problems with particular hardware. Different versions of the modmic have different levels of issues with different hardware.

mine works fine with a usb sound card, however, it picks up really bad static if my phone is too close to it.

Sigh, i dont want to have to spend boatloads of money just so I can play games and talk to my friends at the same time :(

If you have a loud mechanical keyboard its probably easier to spend 30 dollars on key dampeners then a couple hundred to get a specialist microphone which you cant move your head or your out of its pick up zone to still have the keyboard being loud.

I got a USB soundcard and it almost sounds worse :(

that seems kinda weird, although my issue wasnt that it sounded bad without one, people couldnt hear me at all.

 

i would consider checking out Blue, either the snowball or the yeti. they sound good, and arent very expensive. just need the desk space

STOP RECOMMENDING SHOTGUN MICROPHONES FOR THINGS LIKE THIS!

 

A shotgun mic is perfect for isolating unwanted sounds out of the recording due to a very narrow range of pickup. A cardioid would do the same thing, but it is not as narrow, so some extraneous nat sound will be present in the recording.
