Hello.  Finally went back to Debian on my desktop, Xubuntu on my laptop.  I use GNOME on Debian, even though I hate some choices they have made ethically, I just think GNOME is a neat way to go about computing.  I may go to Ubuntu (with some privacy tweaking, of course) once Unity 8 hits officially. 

 

I used to use Antergos and ApricityOS, but I just prefer the easiness of Debian and Debian based distros.  Also, this Czex guy seems pretty upset.  I guess Linux rubbed him wrong, or is stuck in the past.

Lubuntu/Deepin OS user checking in. I hate the default Ubuntu. So fucking ugly. Although it does have nice functionality.

When ever I round up the cash to build my new PC. I am making the jump to world of Linux with Ubuntu. I hate the direction Microsoft has been taking windows in over the past several years. I took Unix Shell Programming in college so I'm pretty confident that I can get comfrtable with a Linux command line pretty quickly.

Having fun with Arch and actually finding the os interesting. I wonder why I ever bothered with the clunkiness of windows as my main os. Sadly, I have to use it if I want to play certain games.

 

I'll get to install arch again this weekend. Hopefully I'll get it right on the first try this time. I'm going to skip some stuff this time to make it lighter.

Mint, but I play with BSD in virtual machines because I want so bad to be super hardcore like that but I'm not (yet).  I often contemplate playing with Arch, though, but don't think I've quite picked up enough Linux knowledge for that just yet.

The only funny thing about the comic strip at the bottom is how blatantly it misrepresents Linux. 

 

Linux Mint has fantastic out of box support as does Ubuntu, to name a couple. Secondly, the only "compiling" you're going to be doing is if you're compiling your own Kernel for a distribution like Gentoo, in which case... yeah, it can be complete hell; however, to show Linux as a whole being as difficult as it is to set up a particular distro is stupid.

 

EDIT: I am using Arch Linux. It is lovely.

The only funny thing about the comic strip at the bottom is how blatantly it misrepresents Linux. 

 

Linux Mint has fantastic out of box support as does Ubuntu, to name a couple. Secondly, the only "compiling" you're going to be doing is if you're compiling your own Kernel for a distribution like Gentoo, in which case... yeah, it can be complete hell; however, to show Linux as a whole being as difficult as it is to set up a particular distro is stupid.

 

EDIT: I am using Arch Linux. It is lovely.

I actually find Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros easier and more intuitive to install than windows. It's also much quicker with less things to do after initial setup outside of customization.

Ran it through CLI over SSH for 3 months and THAT was a more pleasurable experience than I've ever had using Windows.

I'm curious, what is the difference between different linux OSs since anyone can install the same desktop environment on top of most of them?  For example, what is the difference between ubuntu with GNOME, fedora with GNOME, Arch with GNOME, and Mint with GNOME?  Is it just the prepackaged applications and the vocabulary used within the terminal?  I understand that they refer to different repositories.  But for the end user sitting at the computer watching youtube, what is the difference between these and any other OS when the DE can be the same across them all?

I use OS X personally but our system is running in several rkt-ized microservices on top of CoreOS with etcd for distributed kv store and Kubernetes for orchestration.

 

Highly recommend CoreOS. Unusable on the desktop but you can't beat it for distributed systems.

Primary OS on my Laptop is Arch proper, I run Proxmox on my Hypervisor, Zentyal (Ubuntu based Domain Controller VM), Debian 7 (LAMP VM), Ubuntu MATE 14.04 (Testing VM), my Raspberry Pi run's Raspian, and I run a Pfsense box as well.

I'm using Linux Mint.  I'm a tech noob compared to almost everyone here.  But I found Mint easy to use, and I like it better than Windows 7, the OS I came from.

The differences are the base packages they come with, the systems they use by default (for example systemd vs init files, although systemd is pretty ubiquitous at this point), the repositories and software within them and update frequencies. You could just take any distribution and just turn it into any other, but since not everyone wants to build their system from scratch every time (which by the way is entirely possible) it's good that other people take the time to make a functional distribution for you. That's why they're called distributions and not "operating systems" - the operating system is gnu/linux (unless we're talking android) and it is the same for all of them.

 

The user who does nothing but watch youtube probably wouldn't know how to update debian. Ubuntu on the other hand will ask him to press a button and will take care of the rest.
