Question for the Anime Club

Why is so much Anime / Manga filled with creepy pedophilliac overtones. I mean stuff like 10 yo girls with boobs and panty drawings. That kind of creepy stuff seems super prevalent in Japanese stuff. Do you guys thinks it's just more of an open pedo culture or what ? Serious question and not trolling.

 

It's the biggest reason I hate Anime / Manga, the other reason being too much whining in that crap and 10 hours of talking between the parts where significant things transpire.

Well, one of the main reason is that there is a major cultural difference between the West and Japan. 

For example, up skirt shots are (in general) seen as funny rather than sexual. Most prevelant example of this is the original Japanese version of the Pokémon theme song.

 

Secondly, there is a culture of ´liking´ youthful apperance in Japan (it's also thing in Korea and certain parts of China to my knowledge). 

Seeing it as pedofilic is probably not entirely correct, since there is a lot more to it than just sex.

Yes, DBZ pissed me off so much , but other stuff like innuyasha and the one where the kid is a soul reaper they tt much, not all the time though.

Do I really even need to list all the creepy pedo anime, it's like you disagree there is lots of it. Just the first time I got exposure to this was Sailor Moon. In some of the episodes she says she's 11 ffs (at least the dubs). There is lots of non creepy anime as well, I never said there isn't.

 

Since I don't watch it because of that and I don't know a lot of it, here is why it bugs me:

True, but the majority of Horror movies are supernatural or slasher movies, therefore slasher is prevalent. If the story is adults and there naked IDC, it's just the obviously underage stuff that bugs me. There shouldn't be so much that I need to filter it out to find good shows. I like sci fi and documentaries mostly, but also stuff like Adventure Time /Spongebob for sillyness. WHO DOESEN'T like BMO ?!?!

Anime is a huge industry in Japan. Tens of thousands of episodes are produced each year, and the vast majority of it is perfectly harmless (and extremely boring and/or poorly written, but that's besides the point).

And the same thing goes for manga. 

The video you posted only list ten animes. Anime as we know it has existed for about 70 years, so no wonder 10 fucked up examples could be found.

You could probably also find 10 fucked up examples of Western animation. 

You also have to keep in mind that a lot of the anime that make it to a western audience is usually the good ones or the fucked up ones. 

It's the same thing with those overly sexual Japanese game show. They aren't at all common on Japan. They are late night shows intented to be a pornographic spoof of Japanese game shows.

Assuming a sexual Japanese game show is something that airs in prime time is the equvalant of thinking that the porn parody of American Dad airs at 8 on Fox.

And yes, the porn parody of American Dad is a thing. It's pretty much the worst/best thing ever.

The girls being whiny is also a cultural thing. 

High pitched female voices are seen as cute and non-threatning so they are used a lot Japanese media, since they make people comfortable with the person speaking in that high pitched voice.

I would agree that it is extremely annoying. Walking through a Japanese shopping mall is hell, since every store has high pitched woman shouting "Sue-me-ma-sen" outside of it. 

Why they carry this over in the dubs I have no idea. I rarily watch anime and when I do I watch it in japanese.

 

And just to be clear: I'm not saying that anime can't be inappropriate. I'm just saying that it usually isn't the intend.

What is and what isn't inappropriate is culturally determined.

I would also like to add that in a lot of shows they feature fan service which is basically female characters in little or no clothing in something like a shower or a bath (sometimes male characters [***cough**** Free ***cough***]). A thing to consider with shows like that is the age demographic that the show is being targeted to. Not all shows do this, in fact it usually takes away from the plot imo, but they sometimes do this to keep viewers when there is little going on in the episode. This usually only lasts for one episode a season and if it makes more than one appearance, it is most likely a joke.

 

At the same time there are some shows that will shamelessly use fan service as a substitute for any real plot at all (they can usually be found with the two tags ecchi and harem together). A few, some, most of these usually will have a loli somewhere. They are easy enough to avoid and you don't really watch them for the plot. I would go so far as to say that they are borderline porn.

 

Then there is hentai... I'm not going there, I'm just not.

There's weirder stuff that comes from Japan, a few cute loli drawings don't bother me at all nor do I find them creepy.

Plus, not all anime is like that, you pretty much have to cherry pick to find the creepy ones, you can't just shove all anime in one bag and label it all as "creepy", sure you will find quite a few of them, but that's not everything you will find.

The problem with representation is that the taste of Japanese audiences have gone to shit in recent years (imo) with the more fanservice-y anime being brought to the forefront...

Now don't take me wrong here, while I do enjoy fanservice, I treat it as a nice extra to the plot... unless that is indeed the plot (ref. DxD, ToLove-Ru, etc.)...

Anime in itself is deep... with numerous titles and stories out there... and it does not do the media any justice by putting it under the umbrella of "weird"...

(Most analyses suck since very few manage to actually look at the material without ideological filters...)
