Apple Makes Swift Open Source

Back in June at WWDC 2015 Apple surprised a number of people by announcing that they would be making their Swift programming language open source in the near future. Swift is, in a way, a successor to Apple's Objective-C programming language. It opens up development for iOS and OS X to developers that may have struggled with some of the idiosyncrasies of Objective-C, while also including a number of features that have become common among modern programming languages.

Today it appears that everything relating to licensing has been sorted out, and with version 2.2 the Swift programming language will now be made available under the Apache License 2.0, which is the same open source license used by the Android operating system. With Swift going open source, any member of the community can now propose additions to the language. The project is now available on the Apple Github account, along with some other repositories that are home to supporting tools like versions of the LLVM compiler and LLDB debugger for Swift.

For those of you who don't feel like reading the OP, Swift is a programming language based off of Apple's Objective-C that they previously used and it brings several improvements.

 

As for what I think, I'm pretty sure this is the first thing (or one of the first things) that Apple's made that's open source.

Codeacademy is free, which warrants our hype. Java isn't on that site, although it can be learnt through pricy sites like Treehouse.

You might want to learn C/C++ first. Objective C/Swift are not very easy languages.

Old news and to anyone hating just because this is Apple just stop. Swift is an amazing language that is powerful and very easy to use.

Codeacademy is free, which warrants our hype. Java isn't on that site, although it can be learnt through pricy sites like Treehouse.

Swift IS useful.

the only problem with it was how annoying it was for it to be locked down to only OSX development. It's really annoying how I spent many hours getting osx setup on a mac mini I had laying around to find this news the next day.

good news but made me really sour.

the only problem with it was how annoying it was for it to be locked down to only OSX development. It's really annoying how I spent many hours getting osx setup on a mac mini I had laying around to find this news the next day.

good news but made me really sour. 

Ehh, its going to take a while before swift is useful outside of Apple, they only provide OSX and linux compilers and they have no plans to provide official ones to other systems.

Looking forward to it, love the way that site lays out lessons.

Its a great site but lately it has been really buggy for me. I've been trying to pick up PHP and I always get an error saying something like "your script ran too long" while I'm type a simple for loop. Other times it doesn't register the submit action, and freezes at the spinning gear.

Cant Wait for CodeCademy to add it. Its gonna be my first programming language.

Unless you're going for iOS or web development, just get ahead of the game and jump into C++. You master that and the rest come along for the ride.
