Video capture lagging because of CPU?

Hi everyone,

I recently got myself a new graphics card (Asus GTX970) and as I was testing out my games I got the idea of recording my gameplay.
So as any excited person would do I opened up my software of choice (Open Broadcasting Software) and started to record.
In seconds I got the message that my CPU was running high and the recording had alot of lag, the game I was recording only gained a little bit of lag but it was annoying to play.
The only game I can record tho is World of Warcraft running at high settings, but I still a little bit of in-game lag and lag in my footage.

So this is my build:

I don't know what motherboard I have but it has a AM3+ socket
AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.00GHz
Asus GTX970 4G OC Edition
8G of Corsair DDR3
1TB of HDD and 500G of SSD
(i don't know the other parts)

And as I already mentioned I'm recording with Open Broadcasting Software at 720p.

So yeah, can somebody please help me with this problem?
I don't necesseraly wanna buy a new CPU if I can record with the one I have, but i'm willing to upgrade my computer if needed.

Its probably the fact that games are using all 4 cores already, and you capturong software is tryimg to use multiple cores also. Your game and capturing software are both trying run off 4 threads

use nvidia shadowplay it eats less resources

Yeah, the gtx 970 has its own IC for recording w/ shadowplay, so that will definitely help

Your cpu is probably already a bottlenck in your system. If you can afford it, you could get an fx 6300 or 8350 for cheap without changing the motherboard

hello there. Please follow your own topics

you need a new CPU, no really, you do.

your Athlon II X4 is getting quite old by now, and it would have served you well. However it is not really up to snuff in modern times.

i suggest getting a AMD FX 6300 or FX 8320e alongside a ASRock 970 Performance or ASRock 970m PRO3 motherboard. These are cheap options that should greatly alleviate most of your performance issues.

@TheSupremeReptile

here you can see some comparisons in CPU performance.... they didnt have the II X4 640... so i picked the 645 which is slightly faster then your CPU

Athlon II X4 645 vs FX 6300

Athlon II X4 645 vs FX 6350

Athlon II X4 645 vs FX 8320e

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/188?vs=1402

it may seem that the 6350 will be the best "bang for your buck" in this case

NOT VERY GOOD OVERCLOCKING SETUP:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-6350 3.9GHz 6-Core Processor  ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock 970M PRO3 Micro ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard  ($59.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $169.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

THIS SETUP HOWEVER SHOULD PROVIDE DECENT OVERCLOCKING:

you're welcome...

just gonna add: you may want to also ask for a Cooler Master TX3 or Hyper 212 as the stock cooler for the 6350 can get quite loud

Your cpu is enough. I used to game AND stream on an APU. Just set OBS to use NvEnc as the encoder.

It's not like WoW is an intensive game to run.
