Should I Root and Rom my phone?

beebskadoo

So I have a galaxy s3, and I love it. What I don't love all that much is the bloated Touchwiz interface and how it lags a little at times. I am on T-mobile. Which Rom should I go with if any? I do some gaming (Rayman jungle run and A Bards Tale mostly) and I noticed that they lag a little at times and Being a PC gamer, I can't deal with that and it kills the experience. So is there a way to fix that? I am a fairly experienced android user, not exactly a noob when it comes to things but I am curious about ROMS and such :)

Any Suggestions :)

Personally, I love stock android.  But I also do a lot of stuff with network security and pentesting.  So I use my phone as a testing device.  I used wickedsensations rom with my S3, and now use the 4.3 play edition rom for my S4.

Really rooting just depends on why you need it.  Some people do it because they can remove bloatware, some do it because they are like me and they need full customization for writing tools and the like, others want it just because they can do it and they want to brag about rooting their phone because they think it's "cool".  So long as you accept voiding your warranty then it's all good.  I VERY HIGHLY recommend you back up your T-Mobile Rom anyway just in case.  If you ever need to return it for work or whatever, having the ability to use triangle away or something and then flash it back to factory is always a good idea in order to make sure you make full use of money savings with warranty and what not.

Good luck.

And just to put this out there, if you are a PC gamer, a phone will never compare to PC gaming.  There are some impressive phones out there, but a phone is not a full fledged computer, it's meant to be lightweight and therefore lacking in performance when compared to a desktop computer.

I clearly understand that phones aren't pc's but I just want the performance to be a bit better when it comes to games I play to pass the time.

Most reliable source for rooting and roms.

I can recommend "Indie / Omega ROMs" used them for years on my S II and I loved them.

This is a link to the T-Mobile branded S III. If you have a regular one, use the "Find your device" Search in the top right corner ;)

I guess I should rephrase that.  Most roms that are modded cannot have gapps included because of licensing restrictions.  But yes, Google Play is one of the gapps you can install with it (and it is recommended you do).  Mail, Docs, Plus, Talk, Voice, all of these are Google Apps that require you to make sure you install the correct version with your specific rom.  Typically you can find what is needed along with any tutorial that has flashing your rom.  Often the gapps required will be packaged with the rom, but not as part of the rom.  However a lot of installers will install it along with it (technically that is still separate and therefor not violating license terms).

You can always look here:  http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1706

Edit:  I can see @Scia also refereed you there, that should tell you something :)

Don't install CM, install Paranoid Android. Tablet UI is amazing, I've been using it on my S3 for about 6 months and it's great. PA is on 4.3 now, check it out  :)
