R9 M370X Mac can't maintain high performance for 1 min

ZIKS

Hi guys, I bought a maxed out macbook pro 15 inch with a R9 M370X. I can't seem to play games on it on boot camp. Is it only me who's having this problem. The GPU is thermal Throttling. It'll start with 800mhz for a couple of seconds and gradually drop 400~300mhz. Any solutions for this problem?

The macbook GPU does thermal throttle a lot

What kind of performance are you getting in games?

Most Apple computers are designed to thermal throttle. You can try to clean any dust out if you haven't already but chances are it won't do much.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

I can play Dota 2 @ 60FPS constant but once I try playing games like FIFA 16 it stutters really bad. It'll jump from 60 down to 14 fps....

What are the specs to your rig? You rig can probably edit pictures and such way better then the Macbook. I have nothing against Apple just that they overprice their shit way to much because they know some idiot will buy it who has no idea what they are doing. Not saying you are an idiot, just the majoirty of people who buy apple have no idea what they are getting themselves into.

Gaming on a Macbook is not fun. Play some low end games like LoL, Minecraft, ect.

I have a MacBook Pro 15 2015,

Specs:

i7 2.5 Ghz

16GB ram

512GB SSD

R9 M370X

I bought it for the screen actually. Love how natural the Color is. I understand I could've gotten laptop with a gtx980m in it with this price point but I wanted to try out Mac once in my life.

Try forced some crazy AA thru Radeon settings for Fifa 16 since it's not really demanding and will make the GPU to switch to power saving mode for few seconds.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey buddy, I have the same laptop and I was having similar issues, although not 10FPS haha. I installed MSI afterburner and set the graphs to only monitor the GPU temp, CPU temp and GPU clock speed and found that the GPU clock would drop from 800MHz to 725 or 675MHz sometimes even though the GPU temp was only about 75C. I did some testing and found that if you turn off AMD PowerPlay in the MSI settings it will stay at 800MHz and the temps still remain stable at about 75C. I even overclocked by 11.1% to 888MHz on the core and from 1125-1250MHz on the VRAM and still got stable clock speeds and steady temps only 1 or 2 degrees higher than before. I don't think the GPU is actually thermal throttling, I think its to do with AMDs power saving technology that obviously isn't working properly, probably a bug in the driver.

I have been playing The Witcher 2 @1080p with high texture quality and a few other things tuned up like bloom and even on stock speeds (with powerplay disabled) I get 40-50FPS with the occasional dip to 35FPS in really demanding scenes. I also play the Witcher 3, an extremely demanding game, @1280x800 with high texture quality, high grass and a few other things turned on and i get 35-45FPS with the occasional dip and sometimes it maxes out the 60FPS VSYNC limit if I'm indoors or something. Sure its not the best gaming machine but you can still game on it. Also note that both the Witcher 2 and 3 are incredibly demanding games. I can play older games like skyrim on max settings @1080p and sit on the 60FPS VSYNC limit continuously. I can play COD:Black ops at 2880x1800 on max settings with still playable frame rates 35-40 but obviously thats ridiculous so i lower it to 1080p and sit on the 60FPS VSYNC limit instead. It might not be a top-of-the-line 2015 GPU but its more than capable of playing a few games.

But its not throttling based on temp. During my testing I got the GPU to 80C on stock settings and it still didn't throttle. Most of the time its around 75C while playing games and randomly drops down to 725 or 675MHz. I think its to do with AMD PowerPlay bugging out because it doesn't throttle if you turn it off through the MSI Afterburner settings and the temps stay the same. I've done some googling and found that 75C for the GPU is pretty standard in a laptop. Even laptops equipped with the 960M throttle when stressed and their temps go up to ~90C (XPS15 and Asus G501 for example). I don't think the MacBook Pro cooling design is bad, I actually think its very good considering the form factor of the device. If it was a huge chunky gaming laptop then it could have a better cooling solution but thats not the idea of a MacBook Pro. They're thin, light, capable, durable and have incredibly good battery life.

I've finally fixed the issue by playing with several settings (includingwindows 10 power settings, using Throttlestop app, and MSI Afterburner). I've lost hours and now that It's finally running nice & smooth, I thought I'd share exactly what I did to make it work, here's how I killed thorttling on my 15" macbook pro retina with M370X GPU: http://bigbeatworld.blogspot.com/2017/01/a-solution-to-lagthrottle-in-bootcamp.html
