And that will also break his SLI right..... needing 8x8 at least.

Correct. NVIDIA requires x8 regardless of PCIe generation.

my question is pretty simple. i want to get myself a shiny new nvme drive specifically the samsung 950 pro.

i currently run sli in my system and i believe that this ssd needs at least 4 pcie lanes..

my system is z97 and what i have read is 16 lanes from the cpu and 4 from the chipset. i dont know if it will work though.

my mobo

If the last slot is occupied, the first slot goes to x8 and the second slot goes to x4. http://us.msi.com/product/motherboard/Z97-GAMING-5.html#hero-specification

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

the ssd is m.2 so it wouldnt be in a pcie slot if that changes anything. are you saying it wont work?

If it's a PCIe drive, it's going to steal lanes from the CPU.

M.2 PCIe slots use PCIe bandwidth to give you PCIe speeds

sata M.2 slots will not work with a PCIe M.2 ssd

MSI states that it is compatible with PCIe
