1080p gaming - Gigabyte R9 390 vs GTX 970 "Gaming G1"

Clancy

I must be lucky then... But you do make valid points from what I hear...

However...

I can't hear mine, I have heard horror stories about coil whine on GB cards so I know I'm a once-off statistic.

But have to +1 their support tho, they've always been great to me. (But thats GB-AU, not GB-Global) with quick returns and even picking it up via courier instead of me having to do it myself.

But cannot speak for their other country departments, no doubt their not all equal.

Good luck getting in touch with Global :D - you'd have a better time asking Ahmed Mohamed to make you a CPU

Hmmm so you guys reckon Sapphire Nitro R9 390 if I go AMD but  what if i stick with NVIDIA? Is the Gigabyte card a good option or should i be looking at other 970's?

I have a G1 and it is great, though some people have had coil whine no one I personally know and no one on the forum who owns one has tole me they've had whine either, as for support gigabyte is fine in the US but other places idk If you can get a 390 that's from one of the decent AMD card makers (for a similar price) I'd still vote that

There was a thread regarding this - 40% of 100 people on LTT have coil whine with G1 or Strix 970/980s

Didn't know there was a thread, were the votes public or private, or was it everyone talk about their experience based (post)

Good luck :D - you'd have a better time asking Ahmed Mohamed to make you a CPU

That was funnier to read than I expected... top marks.

A friend of mine has the MSI ones in SLI, he has zero issues... He's also in Radelaide like me.

Yeah I have the G1 and a single one at that (Only cos I wanted a backplate, so PC is as sexy as me when stared at through a window)

All of my prev cards were not backplated, and after hearing good things about the G1, (before the 390 series was released) I went and got it. And love it.

I use Shadowplay almost daily (I did have a Avermedia Capture card with my 290x as well way before AMD GE had decent recording options and wasn't buggy as fk)

I also wanted to have a look at Nvidia features (Playing a lot of Nvidia driven titles at the time of my 290x, I was curious, and had the money)

I'm not fussed on having either AMD or Nvidia card in my machine, my 290x is in the HTPC (G10 watercooled) and my GTX 970 is in my main rig atm, playing AC:Syndicate the most lately., tis been much fun.

Well I've rambled enough, ask me a question and I'll answer it eventually.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Don't know why I would do that... Anyway maybe It's because I'm from Australia (think it should still keep temps, who knows might have been faulty card), but I took it back to the local shops, told them the issue, got my money back and got my GTX 970 instead *All Happy*

Either choice it should be ok, both cards are nice and will allow you play anytime at high-ultra.

Most people don't know or don't look or care about users location. (Even tho ambient temps DO matter)

My 290s and 290x's all get way hotter than other peoples, cos ambient temps. (I also live in the upstairs part of the house, where heat pools and its humid, not good when gaming in a small room) I understand what you mean completely, its why I currently have the GTX 970 in my main rig and not my 290x. It's a cooler card overall.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Tiny Tom Logan got a 390X from MSI without Thermal Paste - it was 82*C. after repasting - 72*C

Are these temps Idle or at 100%?

I didn't have the sapphire in the 390 series, but my MSI got to 85* at some points. (point proven  )

Anyway not here to argue  , just giving this guy some fair options.

Here, took this last night on my phone. Was using it to show memory usage but it shows the temp as well, this is playing Fallout 4. I have a Nitro 390 OC

And OP, here are the before and after fps for Fallout 4 and the Crimson drivers.

Different case, Different cooling, atleast 200KM away, Different Weather... You can't just say I will get the same temperatures as him as I'm also from "Australia". Anyway It's gone nothing I can do now.

Might add this later...

Sweet, good to see AMD pushing drivers relatively fast. I remember their drivers used to be pretty average way back in the day

Very nice temps, wish mine was that cool even with the GTX970 I don't get those GTX970 temps, upgrading cooling soon anyway. As it gets to like 38 here in summer.  :o

I'm saying 95*C on a cooler card is kinda sketchy since he tests at 22*C ambient - I highly doubt you live at 45*C ambient

Not 45 or I would be dead :P It get's really hot over here, I think it got to like 40 something last year. But yer avg is around 30ish around now. And I built mine last xmas, so yer it was summer. I guess that 22 was from the southern states (cooler) or in winter.

I think you just got unlucky - either your card (like his) had no thermal paste on it for some reason (MSI are somewhat dumb in that department) or you got a bricked card. But looking at @App4that 's Nitro I do not think a 390 is THAT hot as you describe it.

Remember I have no loyalty to AMD/Radeon, my loyalty lies with Sapphire. You usually pay more for a Sapphire but that extra cast gives you the better cooler. Not to say I wouldn't mind testing a MSI or Gigabyte to see if I could get similar temperatures.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I'm saying if a Sapphire card can run at 60*C then an Asus card running at 90*C is a issue with the cooler, not the card

And that's exactly why I don't like the generic fandom I see here a lot. Yes the 390 is a great card, but there's miles between the different examples made by different companies. Even within Sapphire there are differences, Jay did a piece on this.
