I keep my PC fast by keeping the programs on boot as low as possible, put all non-essential software on my HDD instead of SSD and keep away from sketchy ads on various website's.

Besides that I remove the dust from my pc every 2-3months, depending on how dirty it gets.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

An SSD and a registry free of errors are the biggest contributors by far to a fast, responsive system. Install all the bloatware and PC Extreme Optimizer Advanced SpeedBooster Cleaner Pros that you want - none of it does you any good - in fact it will bog you waaaaaaay down. CCleaner is the only thing you need to keep your PC clear of junk. Keep the programs you need, don't install anything else. Clean the registry once a month, uninstall all the antivirus software (yes, you heard me right) and just don't click on anything suspicious. Don't even think of going looking for dodgy things. No. Stop it. You did, didn't you? *sigh...*

You aren't the 100,000th visitor, it will never NOT be a joke, and you will never win your free iPad. Just don't click on that shit. Install adblock or something.

If you have an HDD, put all the stuff you need quick access to on the Start end of the drive, maybe even put it in a 30-60GB partition of its own. Decreases the seek times and sustained operations by leaps and bound because the data is on the faster-moving outer rim of the platter and the armature has less distance to go to access stuff.

But SSDs, man... Nothing speeds a computer up like a solid state drive. They make all the difference. They'll speed up a Core 2 Quad machine, for heaven's sakes.

Hardware doesn't make your computer FASTER, it makes your computer WORK

Software don't make computers faster either. They are ones that will need power to work.

In all seriousness. Change OS to Linux -> Much faster than windows if you just are talking about boot times and software launching.

What do you mean by faster anyway? Faster launch for software and loading files? SSD and more RAM will do that. General snappiness in operation? RAM and pagefile. More FPS in games? Better hardware and overclocking.

Well, I'm getting the i7 4790K and the GTX 970 SSC, so i think that is good. What is pagefile?

Pagefile is part of storage space which acts like cache for RAM. Certain software and games use it even when you have plenty of RAM available. Systems with limited RAM can gain some more snappiness by making that space bigger.

My personal way is the disable all but the essential startup items through msconfig and just have Ccleaner and AVG PC Tuneup on (turbo mode for AVG)

In all reality, it is down to the hardware, though the above may keep it quick enough for you.

Surely, it is a LAN issue?

I'm building a computer on Christmas Day and I get bored of games pretty quickly (yes even Fallout 4), so I wanted to tinker with some settings to speed up my computer. I know you should defrag your HDD, but I have heard people say it is a bad idea to do so to your SSD? Also what programs do you have installed to speed up your PC? I'm downloading BullGuard Premium for anti-virus, so I don't have to worry about that. What things do you do on a daily or weekly basis to make sure your computer runs silky smooth?

EDIT: My OS is Windows 8.1, if that should matter

By not installing crapware and making sure to install genuine software

Defragging won't ruin an SSD lol. People have blown that way out of proportion.

especially since windows defrag automagically detects it as an ssd, and runs a trim command instead of defragging it lol

But seriously better hardware makes a better and faster computer

Don't call me a nerd, it makes me look slightly smarter than you
