I'm building a computer on Christmas Day and I get bored of games pretty quickly (yes even Fallout 4), so I wanted to tinker with some settings to speed up my computer. I know you should defrag your HDD, but I have heard people say it is a bad idea to do so to your SSD? Also what programs do you have installed to speed up your PC? I'm downloading BullGuard Premium for anti-virus, so I don't have to worry about that. What things do you do on a daily or weekly basis to make sure your computer runs silky smooth?

EDIT: My OS is Windows 8.1, if that should matter

You don't install programs to speed up your PC, that's just what the spam/adware programs want you to think :) Adding any software only makes it slower, that's the general rule. The best way in theory to keep your computer fast is to not use it. Since that's not practical, just try to keep your usage streamlined. Delete old stuff when you're done with it. Don't install things you don't need to. Once in a while glance over the startup program list and disable anything you don't need/want.

I tried a lot of things, nothing really helps much. I used to close browser all the time, close unnecessary folders, clean registries and trash, defrag HDD. Meanwhile SSD is another story, i do nothing and it works wonderfully :)

stripes? flames? the usual!

overclocking, upgrading to an ssd, reinstalling your OS, remove startup items, CPU, GPU, RAM upgrades. Remove crap like norton/mcaffe and other wasteful programs that eat up system resources. Run malwarebytes / AVG tuneup (or your software of choice)

If you are using a HDD you should do regular maintenance (meaning using a software like CCleaner) of the drive for "smooth" performance. If yolu are using a SSD all you need is one that supports TRIM, has high IOPS and is durable and you should be good.

I was going to say something more condescending but you got it.

making sure "removing old stuff" doesnt leave anything behind is worth mentioning as well.

DO NOT DEFRAG AN SSD

it will ruin it

and for stuff i do to keep my pc fast

1. Reinstall windows every second year

2. Leave anti-virus protection to common sense since anti-virus programs can slow down your pc

3. and ofc overclocking

Defragging won't ruin an SSD lol. People have blown that way out of proportion.

I use razer cortex game booster and in most cases it can add upto 5-15 more fps which is pretty impressive since you paying nothing for it...but it depends, I mean if you have a really good setup and your pc never runs out of juice than maybe its not for you...

Hardware makes my PC Faster.

Hardware doesn't make your computer FASTER, it makes your computer WORK

I hate how Intel bought McAfee (I think that was it anyway), if you buy an intel laptop you get a 30-day trial for McAfee and their bullshit pop-ups which is a pain in the ass, and then when the trial runs out McAfee and you laptop start having a heart attack saying your computer is unprotected and prone to viruses and the world is going to end. Intel makes good hardware, but are turning into EA with the money schemes!
