Buying GPU used - GTX 780 Ti, GTX 970?

jpnmusic2

Hey. Right now, I'm about to RMA my Gigabyte R9 280x Rev 3.0 (fan rattling noise) for the 3rd time (god I love you Gigabyte <3), and being sick of it, I'm going to sell it as soon as I receive it back from warranty. With the money from the card + my other PC case that I'll sell, I should have about 300$ CAD, which should probably be enough for a used GTX 780 Ti (saw one for 350$ recently) or a GTX 970 (quite a few of 'em). I've never had any NVIDIA product in my life, and I don't know which one is better overall. I know the GTX 970 is more recent, better technology, 4GB Vram, but from what I've read the GTX 780 Ti has more raw horsepower (?), albeit being more power-hungry and running hotter from what I've seen. Which one would be best for me? Both will be an upgrade from my R9 280x, but still. I do intend to OC the GPU as much as I can while keeping temps reasonable, so. And I don't mind if it's running a bit hot. I'm used to it with my current card, so.

Games I'll be mostly playing. 1920x1080 ONLY:

-War Thunder

- Osu!

- Alliance of Valiant Arms

- Tera

- Armored Warfare

- Counter Strike: Global Offensive

- Rust

Other than that, not much else. Here's my specs if necessary.

Intel Pentium G3258 @ 4.3 GHz

CM Hyper 212 Evo

Kingston HyperX 2x4GB DDR3

MSI Z97 PC Mate

Corsair HX650

NZXT Noctis 450

Thank you. ^o^

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

+1 to bad gigabyte experiences.

Can recommend a 780ti. Still competes with the newest GPU's out there.

The 780 Ti should perform better than the 970, but in actualality the 970 sometimes very slightly outperforms the 780 TI. Would get whichever is cheaper or has a better cooler

but both GPU's will be bottlenecked by your CPU though

I'd probably go for a 970 , IF you can get one for the same price or cheaper than a 780Ti.

Tbh I don't really feel like getting 290/290X used. I got my R9 280x used (150$), and it took me two RMA (first time was pointless, took total of a month) before I got my card (used to have a Rev 2.0). I just don't trust AMD cards anymore, at least the 280/280x/290/290x, since they've been abused with Mining, like mine was. And I've been with AMD since around the time of HD 5770, so I'm sick and tired of them lol. The thing about the 780 Ti that I find attractive is that when OCed, it's almost on the same level as the 980 stock, which is great imo since if I had the money for a 980, I probably wouldn't OC it, just because I wouldn't care. The 970 can also be OCed though, so yeah.. Basically whichever is the cheapest and has the best cooler is the winner?

your cpu is going to bottleneck the fuck out of you. but the 780ti is all around the faster card.

seriously, that cpu should be your next upgrade.

Eventually I will upgrade, but no money now sadly. I'll upgrade the GPU, and ASAP once I'm done with all the school stuff upgrade the CPU. Been on my upgrade list for a long time but always something happening so yeah.

EDIT: Also, when I first built my PC, I had an HD 6950 2GB, so yeah, it didn't require a beast of a CPU. And I'd rather get the GPU now with some tad bottleneck, but only needing to swap the CPU, which is easy to find, than get a good CPU now but meh GPU.
