I'll be using this rig for heavy 3D, 2D rendering and probably games but not really a main concern. I'm going with a dual Xeon build because cores are more important than speed in rendering.

My question here is what Xeon's I should go with. I don't really understand their numbering and what's going on with skylake vs haswell etc. I want something equivalent to an i7 - 5930k I think. I also want this build to last 4-5 years.

I also need help with mobo and psu to support this build.

As for a case, I'm either going with a define R5 or a phantek enthoo luxe.

I appreciate all the help!

morenod901 Historically, I don't believe Windows Home versions have supported multiple processors. There is no definitive answer online from Microsoft that I could find specifically about Windows 10.

You might want to look into this before you wouldn't be able to return it.

I have personally used the 2610's and 2620's running large databases and other heavy workloads, so the 2630's should be just fine for you

I can vouch for the 2630s

Get rid of that PSU though

Like don't buy it

Really

Ohhhh that's good to know. I'll look into it. Is this something that the Pro or Business version would solve normally?

after speaking with Microsoft I can confirm the following:

Windows 10 Home (Maximum processor sockets used = 1)

Windows 10 Professional (Maximum processor sockets used = 2+)

So if anyone is using a workstation machine with a dual Xeon Board you will need windows 10 Professional to make best use of it.  I have also confirmed these findings by upgrading to windows 10 Pro and now both of my processors are registering and being used.

Yes, the Pro version should support at least two processors, possibly more.

I know Windows 8 Pro only supported a maximum of 2 physical processors, so Windows 10 Pro shouldn't give you any troubles.

two 980ti's will be a down the line investment if I end up using GPU rendering as much as I want to. It all depends on the workflow etc. so im being cautious and just keeping 1 980ti for now.

I would probably lean more on a Titan X... Considering you want 3D rendering. You want that VRAM.

Cost x Performance is better on the 980ti's either way. If I did go down GPU rendering, I would quickly need 2-3 more 980ti's in a dedicated GPU enclosure. Those extra 300 bucks on the titan's don't really get me much farther than just one 980 ti.

And of course -650 off the price if you're just getting one for now. No need to get a PSU that powers that rig, if you plan to upgrade get a PSU that can support future needs as well. 1000G2 should do you perfectly. Also, whatever storage solution again. Preferably 850 Pro's or 950's.
