Depends on which 980 Ti
if reference - Fury X is better, if not 980 Ti is better.

Also - what res?
At 1440p they are even at 4K Fury X is faster

If you plan on overclocking, the 980 TI should walk away from the FuryX. It has loads more OC headroom.

1080P seems to be overkill for Fury X or the 980Ti

but yes the 980Ti will be way faster with OC headroom and also lesser hassle of installing the GPU

for now maybe, but it will last him very long

he ain't gonna be overclocking, he's just like me: buy parts, put them in, finish, game on! :)

4GB of HBM - HBM and GDDR5 cannot be compared for the same reason a 3GHz i5 beats a 4GHz 8350 :)

Why not go with the Fury nano ?

You are just comparing a watercooled card to a air cooled card and saying that your friend wats just to game on it and not overclock.

Personal opinion , Ditch the FuryX and go with the nano.

Keep in mind that Crimson is launching at the end of November, I expect that we'll see a nice increase in the performance of AMD's cards.

Just faster memory doesnt mean faster performance if the GPU core is still worse.

Memory speed on its own can only go so far

Memory speed means you can more quickly swap out data thus vastly reducing stuttering when you run out.

Yeah but that doesnt mean that just faster memory will translate to a big jump in performance if the core isnt good

Get the 980 Ti. It's the best card on the market hands down. Fury X is good but almost always falls short. If you're gaming at 1080, the Ti beats the shit out of a Fury.

If you're spending that much don't get an inferior card.

4GB is enough. You will generally hit the GPU limit before you hit the VRAM limit. Only in older SLI configurations such as 680 2GB SLI does it pose a nuisance. 4GB of HBM may also cause a few frames less in Crossfire at 4K. It's not a big deal at all. VRAM is overhyped as being the be-all and end-all; it's really not.

If at 1080p, a 980 or Fury would suffice. The temperatures will be lower and the card will run quieter. If your friend is just a plug in and play type of person, I don't recommend enthusiast cards like the Fury X or 980ti. They are hot and can be a little more trouble than simply upgrading more regularly.

With that said, if I were to suggest a Fury X or 980ti without overclocking for 1080p right now, I'd suggest the 980ti by just a smidgen. I'd go for something like the EVGA SC+ for their extended warranty and support. The Fury X is roughly as powerful as the 980ti pound for pound, but games and benchmarks seem to flourish on Maxwell. The Fury X also has the issue of dealing with a radiator and a pump. It's not a solution I would trust for years of use. The Fury X will be quieter if your pump isn't the type to grind like a mother, but the EVGA 980ti should be quiet enough at temperatures around 75-80°C.

I still suggest a 980 or Fury for 1080p though.
