Overclocking a Xeon?

Is it possible to overclock a Xeon? Are they unlocked?

 

If they ARE unlocked, what would be the point of buying an i7?

Xeons are not unlocked CPUs. You can overclock them using BCLK, but it is not recommended.

Also OP you can use BCLK, since 1366 they've been locked from the multi.

yeah you can overclock it but not that much compared to an i7.

 

you overclock the base clock for a xeon.

You can with BCLK so if you increase BCLK by +5MHz and your Xeon has multiplier 35 then from 100x35 = 3.5GHz you will get 105x35=3.675GHz which is 5% OC and probably the max you can get out of it as BCLK affects clock speed of everything (your PCI-e, RAM, CPU,..) so stability issues are very common.

just bclk oc. Max like 105bclk and thats it. Some perform worse and even get less. And no xmp for xeons, so ram just runs at them default settings of whatever intel says to run at, so just 1866 or 2133.
