Is it possible to overclock a Xeon? Are they unlocked?

If they ARE unlocked, what would be the point of buying an i7?

But first, let's talk about parallel universes.

Spoiler

Intel i7-4790k undervolt, NVidia EVGA GTX 980Ti SC Reference, NVidia EVGA GTX 480 SC Reference, ASUS Z97-A/USB3.1, SK Hynix SL308 240GB, WD Green 2TB, Hynix 1333 8GB (4x2), XFX Core Pro 850w, NH-U12S, 4x NF-F12's, Sennheiser HD 558's, Blue Yeti, Corsair K70 (red), Logitech MX Master, XBox One Controller, ASUS VG248QE 144Hz, HP 2010i

Xeons are not unlocked CPUs. You can overclock them using BCLK, but it is not recommended.

No, they haven't been unlocked since Westmere (the generation prior to Sandy Bridge).

Not unlocked, yes it's possible if you're willing to do it with the base clock. Not as efficient or easy with base clock overclocking, but possible.

Okay, well, nevermind then.

yeah you can overclock it but not that much compared to an i7.

you overclock the base clock for a xeon.

You can with BCLK so if you increase BCLK by +5MHz and your Xeon has multiplier 35 then from 100x35 = 3.5GHz you will get 105x35=3.675GHz which is 5% OC and probably the max you can get out of it as BCLK affects clock speed of everything (your PCI-e, RAM, CPU,..) so stability issues are very common.
