2 500gb 850 evo vs 1 tb

bobfreeman

the 500 gb 850 evo is 152 on newegg right now and a 1tb is $340. should i get 2 500 gb and put them in raid 0? or pay the $40 difference and get the 1 tb?

Do you need one TB of slower storage or 500 GB of really fast storage?

Id get two, 1TB of SSD is 1TB of SSD no matter how you divi it up

And with two you have the option to RAID.

4690K // 212 EVO // Z97-PRO // Vengeance 16GB // GTX 770 GTX 970 // MX100 128GB // Toshiba 1TB // Air 540 // HX650

Logitech G502 RGB // Corsair K65 RGB (MX Red)

raid 0 will still be 1TB

just faster

but software raid comes with a bunch of headaches so IMO its not worth it

one SSD is already fast enough for any regular consumer

2x in Raid 0, that way if 1 fails you only lose half of the capacity not all of it

I would go for the singe drive, if i remember correctly, the benefit of 2 ssds don't scale as well as 2 hdd for reads (I think it's because SSDs are already so much faster). I think it DID help with writes. Going to look for a link from A reputable site:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485.html

Linus disagrees, but he's using Adata and it may be because they are slower:

i currently have a 120 gb 850 evo for windows and a tb hard drive. if i get 2 500gb 850 evo's and put them in raid zero, will i have any problems using samsung migration software to copy my hard drive to the ssd raid?

well first of all, you should not clone anything to an SSD

clean install windows, clean install programs, or copy paste files though windows explorer

second, why do you even need raid?

are you doing professional content creation?

3d rendering? video editing? ???

a single SSD will be much more reliable than a raid 0 array that can make you lose all your data in a single moment

You shouldn't.

if youre just moving the hard drive files then no, you can just plug in the SSDs, copy paste the hard drive files, then unplug the HDD and the stuff will be on the new SSDs

Didn't know he was using RAID 0. That's very insecure storage.

I use it across a HDD that's had 4.7 years use and another that has only had 1 year and it is just fine

thank you, i guess i'll just get the 1 tb since i don't really need the speed improvement that raid 0 provides and don't want to lose all my files

Good choice :) will be way easier to set up

and btw I recommend not installing any of the samsung software

the SSD works without it, the software is unnecessary and can cause problems from what I've seen in the reviews of pretty much every samsung SSD

my 850 Pro is working wonderfully without any software :)

~snip~

Hey there bobfreeman,

A single larger SSD may be a better idea. RAID0 offers good speed increases but not for all types of usage. RAID0 has little influence over the random speeds, the array may actually cause the computer to boot slower as the RAID needs to be initialized first and significantly increases the chance of data corruption and loss.
Larger SSDs generally have better performance compared to smaller ones and a single drive is safer than multiple ones in a RAID0 array so I would suggest going for a single larger one.
