I heard Beats are the best headphones on the market.

From a Beats commercial.. That's not important.

Sennheiser make awesome headphones. I don't know about $180, but you could probably make that work.

10/10 Beats by Dre are the best audiophile headphones. Perfect sound reproduction. After all, they claim it's how the artist wanted you to hear it.

dont get beats.... sorry but beats have horrible sound quality when it come to full range reproduction. I use sennheiser rs 175 headphones and sometimes i find my self just sitting zoned out listening to music cause they sound so good, but they are 250usd but well worth the money

audiophile just means expensive...at that price you just get a good headphone.

No it doesn't...

Audiophile means "a hi-fi enthusiast" (according to google) it also means "dumbass who pays way too much for nothing, then brags about it and won't listen to science." (according to me)

Did I get that right @SSL?

Over ear has nothing to do with the sound profile.

Audiophile means different things to different people, so I don't think using it as a description like this is very descriptive.

10/10

The key is that "music enthusiast" is nowhere in the description.

I find the k7xx to be an exceptionally boring headphone.

The k7xx probably thinks you are a boring headphone.

Depends on your use I have my Sennheisers game zero for pissing about on the computer and talking to mates on skype.
Then i got my Sennheiser HMD 280 Pro for working in the theatre
Then I got my cheap Audio Technica ATH 40 for lobbing in flight cases and touring with.

The Dick of the audio page!

Audiophile is the same as being a necrophile, doesn't "phile" relate/mean or synonymous to the following words?:

-like

-love

-obsession

Expensive is just something alot of people toss around when it comes to the term "audiophile"

Okay, for a recommendation, I'd say go for a second-hand or a sale discount of the following:

-Hifiman HE-400S (I'm told there are people who aren't impressed and aren't happy with it due to its sub-bass, but I've tried it and I am personally fine with it because I am not a fan of bass as much as alot of other people.)
-Philips Fidelio X2

Both are $300 headphones, but if you see one of them on sale in your local audio store that meets your budget or a second hand seller thats most likely not gonna sell it at retail price but atleast $50 cheaper, go for it. If you don't mind adding $50 to your budget, go for it. I can't say you'll go wrong with either one, but try them both. They are both highly sensitive headphones so the need for an amp becomes much more of a luxury than a necessity, which means you won't need one at all.

If you like closed-backs, the only two I can think of are the NAD VISO HP50 and the Shure SRH840.
