Actually bus width of GDDR5 is 32 bits. Divide the bus worth of the 290X or 980 or 980TI by 32 and you arrive at the number of GDDR5 chips on the board.

That bandwidth is pointless when your workload doesn't require it. Games are not bandwidth limited in any way on modern GPUs. In compute you'd have a point, but the Fury X is useless for that due to its tiny frame buffer.

I know that's not HBM's purpose. If you don't have the VRAM to store everything, you will be forced to stream data to and from the GPU to not crash. That's why the Fury X has stuttering issues coming out of its ears in high VRAM games.

You're the one ignoring the frame pacing problems of the Fury X.

... Tell that to the Nvidia 970 3.5GB RAM issue? That was essentially the whole problem, IIRC, the RAM wasn't fast enough to utilize all 4GB in the time it took to dump and reload. Only enough to do it for 3.5GB

Not sure when the graph was made, but I would say you have a point. However, IIRC, again, new AMD GPUs usually have this problem until the drivers fix it. shrug I would expect nothing less than what has been the norm.

Where are the stuttering issues other GPUs with 4GB of VRAM get when running the same games at the same settings? Or is it just the Fury X?

The purpose of VRAM isn't to get data from the system. It's to get frames to your display from the GPU as fast as possible, for obvious reasons.  

Please see my above post about how FPS isn't everything. In fact, it's basically a terrible metric for how you will experience a game, and that's what we care about most, right? 

So like, frame times and frame variance?

 

In which case, 980 Ti wins yet again:

Go check PCper's article. Check all the games in all resolution. 980 Ti pretty much won every time.  :P

More FPS isn't always better. FPS is an average over time. A graph is a lot more informative. The following is just an example for a raw FPS number VS a graph, I'm not arguing anything about the 290X vs Titan.

Do you see that huge green canyon drop to 0 Frames near the end of the graph? That would be very annoying to experience while playing a game. 

It wouldn't matter in that scenario if the 290X got less FPS on average than the Titan. The smoothness of that graph is far more important than Average FPS. 

If I get 30 FPS average, but it's a constant 30 FPS (with no frame drops or anything, i.e. perfect world stuff), it would be better than having 45 FPS average with consistent frame drops down to 10 FPS. 

People just use FPS to argue GPU performance because it's easy and understanding which is actually better is hard. Like someone saying having a 1080p TV is better than a 720p TV. Technically, yes it is, but that's assuming your source is 1080p. And your connection can handle 1080p (VGA VS wtv). And... so on. 

In a perfect world, FPS would be fine to describe GPU performance, but that's not how it works. It's just the easy option even if it's definitely not the best.

Having a constant 30 means it can power more than 30 but is capped so you think it is better. I still see having higher FPS is better all around then the argument console peasants use all the time. "I can't tell 30 FPS from 60FPS as long as it is a constant 30FPS". IT'S NOT

... Tell that to the Nvidia 970 3.5GB RAM issue? That was essentially the whole problem, IIRC, the RAM wasn't fast enough to utilize all 4GB in the time it took to dump and reload. Only enough to do it for 3.5GB

Not sure when the graph was made, but I would say you have a point. However, IIRC, again, new AMD GPUs usually have this problem until the drivers fix it. shrug I would expect nothing less than what has been the norm.

Where are the stuttering issues other GPUs with 4GB of VRAM get when running the same games at the same settings? Or is it just the Fury X?

The 980's not really suffering from it but just gets slow. The 980TI just has the VRAM to cut it.

The 970's problem is a cross bar access to the last 0.5GB of RAM because the attached cache was fused off.

The thing is anyone that as been in this industry for a while will know that nVidia cards age alot worse than amd it happened so many times for example when 680 launched it was faster than everytin now look at the numbers and you will see that the 7970 beats it almost 9/10 times, so if i were to choose i would go for a furyx i know that the 980ti is faster and can be overclocked much further but i just cant trust nvidia with my money anymore ( i was a 680 owner before )

This has been my general feeling. That AMD's drivers suck to begin with but mature well over time, but no one cares if the 7970 is better than the 680 now that the 290X & Fury X are out. 

It's hard to convey such things unfortunately.
