Hi everyone, im looking to possibly upgrade my desktop or I might just build another one and sell my current one and wanted to know your opinions on the matter.

So my current setup is

  • i5-4670k with a Noctua NH-U12 S for cooling
  • Asus VI Hero Z87 Motherboard
  • 16 gb of dd3 G.skill ram
  • Seasonic 750W power supply
  • Asus gtx 780ti
  • Define r4 case

Those are most of the parts, I didn't list the drives since I'll keep them If I decided to sell my current desktop, I would probably also keep the power supply. I might keep the Ram but the new z97 motherboards use ddr4 ram, will ddr3 work as well?

If I build a new desktop my budget would be about $2000? Any suggestions?

Is it better to upgrade the whole desktop or should I just get a gtx 980ti only? Don't get me wrong this pc still runs games very good, but I like to play games on Ultra settings and some are starting to struggle to get 60 fps.

This was my first pc build and I built it late 2013, So I wouldn't mind building another  :) , especially since now I'll choose parts a bit more different, especially the case it just gets boring to look at lol in my opinion, but now im rambling lol.

So what do you guys think?

Thanks

Current Build:

i5-6600k, Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7, Evga GTX 980ti, Kraken X61,  EVGA Supernova 1000w Power Supply, 1tb hard drive, 128gb Samsung ssd, 240gb OCZ ssd, Seagate 1tb Hybrid, Windows 8.1

You won't get your worth out of your current system if you sell it, if I were you I'd try and pick up another GTX 780ti off ebay and throw them in SLI, would really help kick ass- also consider picking up an SSD :)

Z97 only supports DDR3, if you're thinking of Z170 then you should use DDR4.

Pro Tip: don't use flash when taking pictures of your build; use a longer exposure instead. Prop up your camera with something (preferably a tripod) if necessary.

if you use retarded/autistic/etc to mean stupid please gtfo

What he means is, he's confused Z170 with Z97. "but the new Z170 motherboards use ddr4 ram, will ddr3 work as well?" Some boards of the skylake series of chipsets support DDR3, but I wouldn't recommend getting one that does @ThereGoesChris because it usually means it's low end. If you were to go to Z170 though, you'd need a new CPU and DDR4 RAM.

Hey! Buy a 4690k and a gtx 980ti then get a better PSU about 800w if you have plans for overclocking

I think there isn't much point in upgrading unless you are trying to drive triple As at 4K or have a surrond set up then, 780ti (basically the same performance as a 980) is more than capable for 1080p and the i5 4670k is also sufficient.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

I would keep your current setup and add a newer GPU. But let's face it, building a new rig is half the fun.

Yeah thats why im considering it lol Its like christmas when your parts arrive :D

Yeah I kinda figured I won't get anywhere near what I payed for, but its better than getting nothing lol And I actually never considered adding a second gtx 780ti but that might be the cheapest way to get more performance. My only concern with sli is that my card gets up to 85C when under load imagine how much hotter it might get with another one in there lol

Yeah I might do this and then just upgrade my Keyboard and maybe buy a new monitor. It's just so fun when you get your new parts and you start building it lol

Really? That's crazy, maybe focus some of your upgrade path if you pick up another 780ti on a better cooling solution.

You could always manually adjust the fan speed or create a profile for the fan speed in relation to the temperature.
