Hey guys, I'm wondering if water cooling would be feasable in a case that doesnt natively support RADs, can I just stick a 2-fan RAD in push/pull config in place of my current fans? My case is unbranded but it's from somewhere around the 2006 era

I'm not planning to watercool now, but in time when I have the money, and a more powerful processor

My procrastination is the bane of my existence.

I make games and stuff in my spare time.

if you've got the money to water cool, you've got the money to buy a better case.

might i suggest the 900D?

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

You might be able to jerry rig a rad somewhere or if you have the facilities you should be able to cut holes for the rad to go in pretty easily.

However if you're going to be spending a good amount on your computer it's a good thing to also have a decent case.

Sig under construction.

if the fans are placed next to eachother then yes, you should be able to just stick a rad on there. you might find other problems with clearance lateron tough.

generally, all these kind of projects require atleast some form of case modding. so you should consider if you are willing to start cutting things out/adding things to your case.

Do it, why not, but I would suggest buying a Fractal Design Define S.

Well seeing as this is for a project where i'm attempting to push an old case to it's limits; buying a new case defeats the purpose.

Well seeing as my fan mounts are about as close as they can get I should be abe to mount a RAD with some modding then? What if only mounted a thick rad over one fan mount?

Buying a new case would defeat the purpose of this project. :P

It would be nice if you could post pictures.

Off the top of my head you will need to do some major rednecking but it's possible.

If you want to and have the money for it, then yeah, do it.

here you go! mounting a rad in front is basically impossible without mutilating the hard drive mounts.

You'll have to get friendly with a Dremel or tin snips! I installed a120 and a240 in my case that does not support rads (but does have tons of fan slots) and it was a huge pain. I just bought a new case and its coming this week. I don't want that ghetto stuff anymore

I might have to :P although I have two ports with their covers on, could I mount a rad on the outside? by feeding it through those?

I don't think there's an AIO watercooler with tubes that long. If you're going that direction, you may want to get an expandable AIO and replace the original tubes with much, much longer ones.

I guess you could remove the top fan and cut out the grille to route the tubing.

Adults are just kids with bigger wallets.

I dremelled out some mesh from my node 804 to run external water-cooling.  Rad + fans + pump + res sit on top of the case.  It's great cause with no real space constriction of internal mounting you can recycle old / used parts.  See link in sig for pics.

Hmm, interesting. I may just shove some tubing through some empty io panels that have their covers on them, what diameter tubing do you recommend?

maybe i might see about getting a custom fish tank and stick some UV reactive fish in it (Like a double-walled tank, and filling the space between walls with transparent UV reactive fluid. and then sticking some lights in ther and have a pretty sweet looking setup.

Anyone interested in seeing a fish-tank hooked up to a gaming rig?

I run 1/2" ID x 3/4" OD tubing, but really you could get away with 3/8"x1/2" or whatever depending on what barbs you want to buy.  I didn't find that I needed any special angle fittings except from my res to my pump just because of how close together they were and 3/4" tubing not being that flexible.    You're only going to need maybe 4-6 feet total of tubing to round-trip outside the case and back.  Be careful with live fish...if your rad fans fail or something you'll cook them.  I like the idea though.

Yeah, it certainly is an interesting idea I had. And thanks for pointing that out, I'll be sure to find a way to effectively monitor the reservoir temps. Do you know of any colors that go really well with black and gray? I was thinking a luminescent green or blue or something like that.

Black and gray -> orange or yellow.  Pretty much any bright color will work though.
