Graphic Card for Q6600

scotty89

Hi Experts,

I have an old PC system. I hope to upgrade parts by parts so I can back to FPS gaming after almost 2 years.

However i have very tight budget for the upgrade.

My current old rig:

CPU - Intel Q6600 at stock with OCZ Vendetta 2

Motherboard - XFX 780i SLI Mobo

RAM - Temporary Kingston 800Mhz DDR2 2GB x2

(Sent CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066Mhz for RMA)  <_<

PSU: 750W

Old Graphic Card: SLI / Tri-SLI GTX285  :( stuck at old DirectX.

I thinking to upgrade graphic card 1st to play FPS games (Titanfall, Envolve, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Battlefield Hardline, Rainbow Six Siege possible?)

60 FPS on 1920x1080 settings on these game already satisfied my need :)

Can I get GTX970 for future proof upgrade and temporary play those games with the settings?

Please advise :)

I will say the R9 380 will be great for 1080P gaming

you can look at the R9 390 if you are planning to get the GTX970

you def need to OC that CPU of yours to if you want to pair a decent GPU

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Depends from CPU that you will buy. GTX 970/R9 390 and i5 4xxx/i5 6xxx would be a good combo.

He said that he will upgrade part by part, but you have a point.

I did a brief research on OC my CPU, should easily getting 3 Ghz at stock voltage and higher if correct voltage and good cooler at 3.4 Ghz ~ 3.6 Ghz?

My plan is getting X99 Asus Sabertooth Mobo with i7, but they did cost me a lot at the moment :(

I prefer Nvidia if possible even AMD GC are cheaper :)

Why do you need X99? http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/232325-lga775-core2duo-core2quad-overclocking-guide/ this will come handy when OC'ing your current CPU.

you wont need X99 even the Z170 and Skylake will be more than enough

My future parts for upgrade :)

You don't need x99 unless you earn money from rendering or something.

I'm running a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz with a GTX560 in my 3rd rig and the CPU already bottlenecks this card in many games, so unless you plan to upgrade your CPU soon, then i don't think you will have a lot fun in titles likes Battlefield Hardline. COD and CSGO and such should be fine though, but you don't need a high end graphics card for those. In my experience the single core performance doesn't scale very well beyond 3 - 3.2 Ghz on the Q6600, so imo not really worth it to go for even higher clocks on that chip.

I did know about that..and also thought to get for GTX780 / 780i.. however, worried that in few more years.. the software/driver update stopped on those series... this happens after i bought my GTX285 last time.. :(

Thanks :) mention by dragoon20005, but will consider Z170 as I prefer to upgrade 2011 socket mobo..

What's your power supply?

Cant recall the brand, not a famous one.. but it is a 750w..

Hmm.. will consider that.. just one of the reason that model as to reduce dust on the mobo..

But Z170 did save me some money..

Thanks :)

X99 is 2011-3. 2011 is X79.
