Crossfireing an msi r9 290 with gigabyte a r9 290?

Go to solution Solved by mapegl,

AMD usually lets you crossfire same chips. So a 7950 with 7970 is possible, a 290 with a 290X. A 7850 with a 7870 (not xt)....

I guess you get the picture. Same chips like two 290s are no problem at all.

I am thinking of crossfireing my current msi 290 with another 290.  I can't see the same 290 on newegg so I was thinking of getting a different one.  The one I like the most is the one gigabyte makes.  I've heard somewhere that you can crossfire different cards as long as it's the same make (ie. 290s with 290s, etc.) and the same memory.  All I would like to know is if that is true and if these two cards could be crossfired.  both of the cards do have 4GB.

You shouldn't have any issues crossfiring those cards.

in fact with AMD you can crossfire even different GPU's and they will turn off the extra stream processor so the strongest card would ''downgrade'' to the spec of the lower one for example you could even trow in a R9 390X with your R9 290 and it would totaly work in crossfire but your R9 390X would ''downgrade'' it's specs to match that of your R9 290 :)

Amd is quite flexible you can crossfire cards with different amount of memory as well, nvidia on the other end both cards must have the same specs.
