It supports DX12 - any GCN card supports it.

No.

the HW Identifier will not allow the chip to take full advantage of DX 12.

7900 series is basically a R9 200 series, mine supports most of DX12 (in benchmarks at least the performance is very similar compared to R9 280)

The R9 series supports DirectX 12. There just weren't any references to DX12 when the marketing descriptions for that hardware was created and they haven't bothered to update it.

R9 cards are GCN architecture which is indicated to support DX12.

Again, the HD Identifier dis-allows the card to take FULL Advantage of DX12 or Vulkan

The problem is that DX12 support comes in two ways. The first is whether the card will support the API at all, and in this case the 7970 will run DX12 games. However DX12 also has additional features and the 7970 will not support those as its an earlier version GCN card. This is why you get the yes and no, yes it will have a DX12 driver, no it wont support the new features in DX12. Its that simple.

Yeah.

Though Tahiti are still good - 280X puts up a decent fight but the 380 gets a bigger boost from DX12. Really eager to see Tonga XT (380X)

370X should be a 270X rebrand really. 380X is a brand new chip though.

I think the question you should be asking is whether or not you can play dx12 games with the 7970 and that's a yes.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

My advice - buy it, use it, when you are no longer satisfied with the fps/settings, buy a new card. optimal way to do things really. No sense in selling a 7970 next year when it can currently run any game on high 60 fps 1080p
