Noise Levels for HDDs - Seagate compared to Western Digital

I have both Seagate and WD hard drives. 

 

To me, the WD are noisy compared to the Seagate drives.  

 

People say that the WD are more reliable the Seagates.  I have also read that this was only in the 2TB Seagate drives that were made during the Thailand floods a few years ago.

 

I dunno, maybe it's just me.

my 2TB seagate from a few years ago began getting relocated sectors after 1 or 2 years

the WD drive that I had in my PC since 5+ years ago was in perfect condition

 

I replaced both of them with a WD red

Interesting you found a sound difference, I've used both in the past and they seemed to be equal, but the WD Black in my new rig (specs in sig) is quite loud.

Same WD I'm using, the WD Black.  It is louder than the Seagate Barracuda I'm using in the same PC.

I had one Seagate NAS drive (I forget if it was 2/3/4TB) and have had over 12 WD Red drives (currently, 6x 4TB & 2x 3TB in active use). The one Seagate drive was the noisiest drive I have ever owned in my entire life. It had a constant high-pitch whine. Meanwhile, the 8 WD Red drives I've got are quieter than the fans that cool them. That said I have never had a Seagate drive fail on me and neither have any of my WD Reds.

HDD noise is more luck of the draw tbh. 

 

Most of my drives are very quiet. I've only had one or two that've been noisy.
