upgrade advise needed

dupdeon
Go to solution Solved by App4that,

Everyone is AMD crazy because they have the newest GPU's. 4g of Vram is a good amount right now, could change in a year but no way of knowing that. 4g might be overkill in a year. The R9 2xx GPUs are proven, but because they are no longer made are expensive in many regions. The 3xx AMDs offer great performance for the money in many regions, but in my opinion are not proven yet. The Nvidea 9xx GPUs are proven and in some regions competitive in price to the AMDs. I went with a 290 because it's a proven platform and bought it before the price increase even though the 390 was already out. If I was to buy today I would consider the 970.

Good day all, just a quick question I currently have a Nvidia 650 graphics card, I am looking at upgrading this what would best bet be for a reasonable price not like 980ti or titan X, looking though to stay with Nvidia.

regards

You're a bit out of luck as the 980 Ti is the only Nvidia card currently better than the AMD counterpart :/

I'd say a R9 380 is what you'd probably find appealing as it's not that expensive and beats a 960 by about 15% on average.

this.

i feel like the 980Ti is a pretty decent bang with not too much of a price hike. sometimes you just have to bite.

it should last you as long as your 650 has.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

What resolution are you playing at? 1080p GTX 970 or R9 390.

R9 380 is more than fine for Ultra 1080p

970 is nice, but maby a 300 series AMD one would suit you better, if you get the 980TI it will probably last for a while not like the 970 wich will maby be out dated a year or two from now the 980TI might last a cople more, also depends on reseloution and how this whole 4K thing goes...

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I'd get a R9 290, it has amazing value for only 230-270 dollars.

Actually - yes. You can, R9 380 is quite a bit better than a 960 - it can easily handle games like Battlefield 4 or Battlefront Ultra 60 fps - 960 can;t

This ^ I reviewed a 960 and it would only get 40-50 FPS.

Look for an R9 380 - it will last a decent bit without issues. 4G models are optimal price:performance.

snip!

Core i3 CPU should be paired with nvidia GPU's such as the GTX 950/960...here's why... start listening at 1:30

So...as you can see even though the R9 380 is a more powerful card it will be greatly limited by this user's CPU because of very very poor AMD DX11 drivers. unfortunately!

The core i3-4130 already limit the performance of an R7 360...but it would do fine with a GTX 960...i would go no higher than that for that CPU though...i would recommend a used GTX 770 or something.

please do your research...any plan on upgrading the i3 processor to an i5 or i7 any time soon?

Your current CPU in your profile is i3-4130 and this will limit the performance of those mid-range cards you might want to trow at it...it will be worse on AMD side of the fence in regards to CPU ressources required to run games...if you plan moving to a quad-core CPU soon then you should just go by the benchmarks and buy the most powerful GPU you can get or look for used ones even.

AN R9 380 has good price to performance but you must have the proper CPU horsepower to push it, and you don't.

AMD's are fine, price to performance they beat Nvidia in the mid range market where you find yourself. But it is YOUR purchase. You have to look at the card you buy in your case and be happy with it.

That i5 is a great choice, also check out the Xeon 1231v3.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Great little processor, LOVES to overclock. I'm constantly amazed at what it can do. If you're not in the market for a i7 like the 4790K or 6700K, I highly recommend getting the 4690K.
